Recommended Y-DNA Test?

Can someone recommend a site for Y-DNA testing. I'm a real noob in this area and need guidance.

23andMe is the go-to site for y-DNA testing. Also check with Diahan Southard at https://www.yourdnaguide.com for more about Y-DNA. She has a free (registration required) mini-course that might be useful as well. Good luck.

Unless I’m mistaken, 23andMe only does autosomal testing but tests a few extra markers to provide an estimate of both Y (if male) and mt haplogroups.

if one wants to do a typical Y-DNA test the only option I’m aware of is FamilyTreeDNA, which offers 12, 25, 37, 67 and 111 marker tests as well as the « Big Y » test (700 markers + SNPs). I believe other companies offer the « Big Y » equivalent.

I think you're right -- After Ed's message, I went to their website and spent a lot of time looking for Y-DNA, but never found it.

Depending on your finances, and what you're hoping to find, consider carefully getting the most expensive test you can afford - including the Big-Y 700.

I started out years ago with Y25, and over the 15 years or how ever long it's been, I've spent considerably more upgrading to 37, then 67, then 111 and just recently 700 than a Big Y700 would have cost had it been available when I started. (the last upgrade from Y111 go BigY alone was $229.

I manage a number of tests for my immediate and extended family. I usually settle for the Y-37 when the goal is simply to identify the haplogroup and try and match with others. I did the Big Y-700 for myself and the level of detail you get is pretty impressive (though, to be honest, I'm not sure how useful that is until more people do such tests).
