    Smart list for notes??

    Hi Guys

Is it possible to make a smart list for populated notes field like you can for facts and events? I wish to have a family view that only shows the notes that contain text and doesn't take up space showing notes that don't hold any info.

I've read the manual and couldn't see anything but I thought one of you guru's may have a work around.

    Sue-
No, not as currently implemented anyway.

In my situation, oftentimes my various notes fields contain too much text per person to fit entirely into the family view, so my notes data would still need to be scrolled regardless. This would be true even if the empty note fields were suppressed.

FYI I have defined separate notes fields for census transcriptions, obituary transcriptions, biographies, military records, research reminders, etc., rather than combining all into a single note field. This way at least I have selective control as to which types of notes show in various views and reports.

      Thanks Byron.

I only have three types of notes in my single surname family file, Misc., Military and Research. I don't record as much detail as I do for my own family file. It's my EDEN single name study, I'm working on at the moment and thought a smart list for notes would be very handy when researching large volumes of people. Maybe I'll have to take your different views approach to achieve what I'm after.

      Thanks again

That's what I am thinking of doing too, Bryon. Do you know how well it works when you export a gedcom and import it somewhere else? This is exactly what I want to do.

First let me say I don’t do gedcoms.

But there should be no problem exporting from Reunion if you set up the gedcom tags in the Fields Preferences window. However, as others have noted, the real issue lies with the importing by other programs. Results will likely vary depending on how each destination application handles multiple kinds of notes fields.

But again, if you set up multiple kinds of note fields you can be selective as to which kinds of notes will be included in your export from Reunion. For instance, if you have a note type for "future research" you can suppress these research reminders from the gedcom export yet include them in you own specialized report.
