Multimedia in family view

When adding multimedia to a person I find that the first item added becomes the 'preferred' picture. If it is a document I do not wish it to show as such and it is frustrating to have to then open it and uncheck 'preferred'. I have tried to find if there is a default setting for this but have not had any luck.

If there is no solution to this I would like to put it on the 'wish list'.

Also .... when there are only documents added there is nothing to indicate this on the main family page. The new way of showing that there is multimedia on the marriage bar is great, so showing the icon is also needed on the 'person' boxes. I hope we don't have to wait for another major update to have this added :-)

According to the Help File:

"Document files linked to people and families have limitations compared to image files. For example, a preferred picture must be an image file (such as a JPEG, PNG, or PDF file) and can't be a document file (such as a RTF or Text file)."

So, the first questions have to be: How come your 'document files' are being auto-selected as preferred pictures? Or, are they in fact PDF images?

Thank you Mervyn for pointing out the different types of acceptable format for attachments. The ones I have been concerned with have been mainly JPGs and PDFs of what I would consider to be 'documents', as opposed to a photograph to be used on the family page.

As I said, I have found that if no 'personal' photograph has already been added these JPGs and PDFs appear as the 'preferred picture'.

If you double-click the offending document in the Multimedia Sidebar, the Multimedia window will open. When the document is selected in the Multimedia window, check the "Treat as document" box. This will remove the image as a preferred picture.

Thank you Tim. That is what I have been doing. However, I thought that as only one item being added is there to be 'the' preferred photo, it makes more sense to have the default set so that does not have to be done when there is no preferred photo - or am I the only one who doesn't already have photos for each person before adding other multimedia?

There's no right or wrong here, but most of my multimedia documents are linked to sources rather than to people, so the issue doesn't come up much for me.

As a side comment, checking the treat as document box not only removes an image from preferred picture eligibility, but it also removes the image from Reunion 11 slideshows and Thumbnails, and causes the image to be treated differently in reports.
