Quotation marks and Italics

When I try to use quotation marks using shift + " it looks like " and then quickly changes to a symbol of two << marks close together instead. What is the problem? If I turn off smart quotes, I do get the regular quote marks, but it appears that there is a glitch in smart quotes. I just upgraded to Reunion 11, and there was no problem with this in 10.

I also noticed that some fonts (Lucida for example) do not support Italics. So I changed my default font to Times New Roman.

Somebody more knowledgable will be along shortly I am sure. I am pretty new, but your mention of smart quotes reminds me that one of the maintenance releases mentioned those. Do you have latest update? (11.0.5)

Recommend that you check System Prefs >> Keyboard then choose the text tab to see what shortcuts are set for text. It's not likely this is the culprit but it should be checked just to eliminate one possibility.

I noticed the same thing, and specifically with Reunion 11. In Reunion 10 and in all other software, it's as it has always been before, that is when I use ", it stays ". But in Reunion 11, when I use ", it gets changed to « when at the beginning of the word/phrase, and to » when at the end.

I noticed the same thing, and specifically with Reunion 11. In Reunion 10 and in all other software, it's as it has always been before, that is when I use ", it stays ". But in Reunion 11, when I use ", it gets changed to « when at the beginning of the word/phrase, and to » when at the end.

My "General" & "Family View" Preferences show my font as Lucida Grande and "Use smart quotes" is checked. I am in Reunion v.11.0.5. My quotes look fine and don't change.

I don't know anything about "it looks like", so sorry about my ignorance there. But if you have an English language keyboard layout you'd normally type a left guillemet («) by typing option-\, and a right guillemet (») by typing option-shift-\. These characters are often used as quotation marks in French.

If you have changed to a French language keyboard layout you could type option-7 or option-shift-7.

This will only work if the font you use contains guillemets. (Symbol font, for example, gives you something else.) But both Time New Roman and Lucida Grande contain guillemets.

So one thing I'd suggest is checking your keyboard language. Though it probably won't help

By the way, you can note that I have been able to write "a word" in ReunionTalk without any problem.

I wonder whether this is some sort of interaction between OS X's smart quotes (where one of the substitution options is guillemets) and Reunion's smart quotes. This one is probably for Leister to resolve...

Thanks for all the suggestions - It may be a Leister issue, but see below what I have learned. First, to clarify: I do have the latest version 11.0.5. I did look at my Systems Preferences-Keyboard-Input Sources -Keyboard & Character Viewer (U.S. is checked)
-Language (which has English at the top of the list) Then I looked at Text

In the Text window is a list of symbols and text substitutions, as well as a button called Smart Quotes. That button shows Smart Quotes with «abc» - I have never even looked at this window before, and until I installed Reunion 11.0.5, the quotation marks were always fine in Reunion text. SO, I changed that button so it is "abc" (the first one on the list of choices). Then I checked to see if smart quotes worked properly in a Word document (which it does). So, I believe this is fixed. BUT, I still have no clue why this occurred and apparently I was not the only person affected.

Lucida may be attractive, but as Carole notes, it does not support Italics, which is a built-in function of Reunion. I've made use of italics for many years, usually if I have to put in the name of a publication in the notes. This is a common stylistic use.

It surprises me somewhat that LeisterPro chose to use a font which did not support all of it's long-established features.

As Carole notes, it is easy to change to a different font.
