    Adoption

When I was using Legacy in windows I could specify the relationship of a child to his or her mother and the relationship to his or her father. It was not assumed that the relationship was the same for both parents. I have several people in my family tree that the spouse adopted the child/children of the person they married. So said child/children are adopted by one parent and the natural child/children of the other parent. I see no easy way to note this in Reunion. So the relationship is clear and easy to find.

If I pick 'adopted' from child status and that shows up on the family page it gives the wrong impression. As the child is adopted by only one of the parents it's listed with. I can and have made a 'adoption' fact where in the memo area I state the child was adopted by his or her mother/father's spouse. But I would like something better.

Had Reunion considered a new child status that indicates an adoption by parents new spouse such as 'adopted by mother's new husband' and 'adopted by father's new wife'??? Or perhaps 'adopted/natural??? Or some other shorter term to mean the same thing?

Diane, You can define your own child statuses for these purposes. Choose Reunion > Preferences > Child Status and you'll see a "New Status" button. Then you can name and pick a color for the new statuses you create.

I have a situation like Diane's. The mother had a child out of wedlock. The biological father is unknown. When she married, her husband adopted the child. I have used the "New Status" button, but don't know how to attach it to the child. David

        Thanks. I didn't see that.

Step-by-step instructions for adding a child status can be found by opening the manual (Help -> Contents), searching "child status" (no quotes), and reading the entry titled "Assigning Child Status to a Child".

The short version is to CTRL+Click/Right-Click on the child in the Children area of the Family View, go to "Child Status" in the menu that opens, and click on the appropriate status.
