Backing up--curiosity question

I have for a long time just made a copy of my reunion files and put them on my mom's Mac (Yosemite). It's a 150 miles from here. She has worse than lousy internet service, so I don't use dropbox--I also don't want any changes made there. I have in the past just dragged my family file to a flash drive. This time, almost everything was an .exe file.

What did I do wrong? Next time, if I remember, I will use the back up command.
