    Match & Merge People

I have two people. One from documentation.

    Winefred M. Wille
    b. 10 Oct 1910 in Carroll, Iowa, USA
    d. 7 May 1996 in Carroll, Iowa, USA
buried. Mt. Olivet/Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Carroll, Iowa, USA

    and another from gravestone.

They are obviously the same person, but when I mark just the two of them and attempt a "Match & Merge People..." it says it can't find a match based on name and dates. Does anybody have any ideas what is preventing it from making a connection between the two? Both are female. Does the name have to be EXACTLY the same like the example in the manual?

When you have two entries that you are certain are duplicates, the best solution is to use the "easy merge" - basically, click-drag one of the entries from the People sidebar onto the name button of the other entry in the family view and select the option to merge the entries.

If you search "easy merge" (no quotes) in the manual (Help -> Contents) you should find an entry titled "Merging People the Easy Way" which outlines this procedure in more detail.

Thank you, Mark. I'll read up and try that. I'm sure it's in the manual, I didn't see it.

Well, my goodness. You do learn something every day, as they say. Thanks for this super information, Mark.

I didn't know that, but I must say I've been frustrated like Blaise in situations where you know for sure two people are the same, you Mark them, but Match and Merge stubbornly refuses to acknowledge they might match for the smallest of differences and so offer them up.

It's news to me, too, and nice to know. But up until now, when I wanted to merge two people, I just edited the name of one to match. It's worked well enough for me.
