    Counting surnames

I would like to find out how many different surnames there are in a Family File, but cannot figure out how to do this short of exporting a list of all the names and manipulating them in Numbers.

Anyone got any suggestions? I am using Reunion 11.0.8.

Yes. Open your family file and choose File -> Get Info.

The information window will show the number of last names in that particular family file

Perhaps you are looking for counting the usage of names:
Go to Reports -> Last names -> sort on Names, Usage
If you wish, share the report, convert the rtf to txt and import this in Excel/Numbers

Thank you. That was exactly what I needed.

I had seen this but it seemed inconsistent with what I was expecting - by a wide margin! A GEDCOM export to FTM came back with "Surnames 669" in FTM whereas Reunion reported 1605 - yet the total number of people in the two files was the same in both at 3547.

Odd. More digging required, I think. A friend is converting from FTM to RM and we need to be sure that the data from Reunion is getting there OK. I have suggested that she exports a GEDCOM from RM which I can import and compare what is received with what I had to start with.

The mystery deepened, but is now (partially) resolved. I used a brute force method (involving exporting the People list into Numbers via Pages) to determine that there were in fact 669 different surnames in the file. Yet Get Info still said 1605.

This particular Family File was derived from a parent file by making a copy of the parent and deleting a large number of unwanted trees. When I checked the parent I found that that also showed 1605 surnames - evidently deleting the unwanted ones did not remove them from the (hidden) list that Get Info uses. Leister please note!

Rebuilding caches did not fix this. But I went to a person with no surname and typed the first few letters of another name into the field. I was offered the option to rebuild the surname list, which I took. I then deleted my typing.

And Lo! Get Info now shows 668 surnames. This is one less than is actually there, but near enough, I guess. Why it does not show the correct 669, as FTM does, I have no idea.

I wonder if the same problem applies to the Places count? I think (and hope) not.
