Several of my families have children who became nuns. My problem is how to name them. For example, a girl is born Gertrude Jones. She becomes a nun and takes the name ["Sister" as prefix title] MaryTherese. In this particular time period nuns did not use their surname. I have been entering them as their birth name but for most of their life they were known by their religious name. This is somewhat similar to a woman taking a married name but is not really the same. Any suggestions as to how to handle this situation?

Re: Names for nuns
I use the birth name as I do for any other child of a couple. But I also use the Alias/AKA field under facts to record the religious name. I have altered my card preferences so that the Alias field appears under the name in the family view.

Re: Names for nuns
Actually, it's pretty easy to get it into a report in most cases, though it may not show up exactly where you expect.
When you are creating your report, use the pulldown menu at the bottom to 'define layouts'.
On the right at the bottom of the window that opens up you will see a choice to create a new layout, delete a layout, or duplicate a layout. I always duplicate the one I use most when I want to try something new.
In the center 'settings' column, click on 'Person Fields'.
Now in the far right column, scroll down until you see the Alias/AKA field. Tick it on, save your layout, and you should be able to print a report with the Alias, in this case the religious name, showing.
And one more possibility — you can create a custom fact and name it 'Religious Name' if you prefer to leave the alias/aka alone and use the same methods to print it in reports.Researching DEBEE, FRERICHS/FREDERICKS, HAHNENENKAMP, JANCO, KOLK, PETRINI, WEISS
