    Migration Map

Does anyone know how to create a map showing the migration progression of the various branches of a Family Tree? My mother's began in Québec City in 1666 and I received a question as to when and where did the first ones get to the States.

Ideally, I'd like to put it in a slow GIF, if I could.

There is a Windows product called Family Atlas which can import a Gedcom file from Reunion in order to produce exactly what you are after. The downside is that you have to be able to run a Windows program and also even if you have geocoded your locations in Reunion you will need to do it again in Family Atlas. It would be good if Reunion had this functionality to avoid the need to resort to this solution.

Thank you! I shall look into it. I run Parallels with Win7 and would enjoy playing with it. Yes, this would be a wonderful addition to Reunion. There's a Mac Version, too.

Thank you for letting me know there is now a Mac version; I have now installed a copy. There was no need to re-purchase the product since it accepted the registration key I used for the original Windows purchase.

I have tried using it and although it works under OSX it still seems like a Windows product that has somehow been made to work under OSX e.g. when you want to browse to import a Gedcom file it refers to drive C: It still needs to re-geocode all place names which is a pain if you have a large file that you have already gone to the trouble of geocoding in Reunion. I don't know if this is a feature of Gedcom files that they don't include lat/lon data or if it is a limitation of Family Atlas. Apparently Family Atlas will import a text file of place names with their latitudes and longitudes but I can't find a way of exporting such a file from Reunion.

NONE of the 'Mac programs' currently offered by Rootsmagic are native OS X programs. They are all WINE conversions of their native Windows software. No doubt a holding strategy, which they seem to have extended since Ancestry initially announced that they were abandoning the continued development of Family Tree Maker on both Windows and OS X, until the planned 'cross-platform' RootsMagic software re-writes are ready for public distribution/sale.

When Reunion exports a GEDCOM file, geographic coordinates are exported with places in the GEDCOM file. I don't know why Family Atlas would not import the codes.

When I produce a GEDCOM file from Reunion it does not include any geographic data with the place names. Is there some option I should be selecting in order to include latitude and longitude? I have selected Destination GEDCOM 5.5, GEDCOM character set UTF-8, Line length 128.

Look toward the end of the GEDCOM file. Here's an example…

                0 _PLAC Harrisburg, PA
                1 MAP
                2 LATI 40.273191100
                2 LONG -76.886700800
                0 _PLAC York, PA
                1 MAP
                2 LATI 39.962598400
                2 LONG -76.727745000

Note that the place records with map data do not appear within the individual records (INDI). Perhaps that's where you were looking.

Where did you get your copy of Family Atlas for Mac? I went to the website but the link is not valid. I, too, purchased it for Windows but would like to use it with Reunion.

                    Thanks,

Thanks, Melvyn, but that's the one I found, too. The Download link doesn't work.

                          Hi Kathy,

                          Here's the link I used:

Up at the top of the page you will see a small Mac OSX icon

Thank you, Chris. The download link doesn't work so I did write to RootsMagic sales. If I get any kind of an answer, I'll post it here for others who may be interested.

OK. I finally just called RootsMagic to ask about this as the link on their website does not work .... and neither did an email to their sales department.

Anyway, here is the link to the Mac installer for Family Atlas. https://www.rootsmagic.com/download/Family-Atlas/

Remember, you either need to have a registration key for a previously purchased Windows version of Family Atlas or a newly purchased Family Atlas.

Now to get my Reunion info into it.
