    removing a duplicate source

I have unfortunately established two sources with the same name but different #'s. Example: England Census 1841, # 53 and England Census 1841, #24. People are linked to one or the other and fortunately the number of people isn't too large. I guess I need to delete one. I can use the source side bar-tools-show usage to see who uses each one. Should I then make sure all those with #24 are sourced with #53 as well and then completely delete one of the two? Or is there another way.

    Thanks,

    Cal

You should be able to merge the sources, which will not affect any of the citations.

Thank you. That's looks like an easy solution!

Why? I have 34 different sources which are pages from the Census of England in 1841, each with its image attached, and I see no need to merge them - better as they are!

I'm pretty green at this but how do you "attach" and image and i guess you mean census image to the source?

In Help>Contents (i.e. the manual) search for 'multimedia source' and read the first result, Multimedia in Source Records, plus its following next two paras. This gives you four alternative ways to add images to sources (two by dragging, two by clicking - personally I use drag). But before you can do that, you need to decide where you will be dragging from - that is, where you will have stored such things. Would you like suggestions about that?

Thanks Michael. I'm happy to have any suggestions. I did find the methods available. I agree with you on the "drag" approach. I have at the moment stored the images in a desktop folder. I have also looked at what some people have suggested regarding recording census info. I do like the simplicity of your approach and seeing everything there. A couple of questions here. Do you "type" the info from the census like 'reg district' or 'household schedule number' somewhere or is the fact that you have attached an image of the census record enough? I am pondering about attaching the census record to the person instead of the source although it probably belongs with the source. It would eliminate creating so many individual sources. The problem for me is it's like buying a car, there are too many possibilities.

                  Re: removing a duplicate source

Well, since you ask, my practice with census images is 1) download to desktop, 2) rename, 3) adjust for cropping, contrast, etc, 4) move to proper place in storage system. I think it’s best to create your own pet system of storage folders, but for me, in the case we have been discussing, that would be Genealogy>Documents>Census>1841, and the image name would be a placename followed by 41a (e.g. Stebbing41a), or if I already have one from there, 41b, etc. (Some people incorporate surnames here.)

I attach those images to the sources. Then in my Family View, the biggest field is a Notes field which I call Dates that contains in chronological order everything I can put a date to. And yes, this all has to be typed, but I think it's worth it. I attach a sample. Of course, an item for inclusion in one person's Dates field can, to save work, be duplicated, tweaked, and pasted into another.

                    Hallo Michael,
As a matter of interest, do you attach the original enumerator's record to your source or a copy such as from FMP, family Search, Ancestry etc. Or both?

Hi, Rupert. I use the photographic image of that page of the census (or if it runs over, I may stitch together the bottom of one page and the top of the next). These I download, usually from Ancestry. But now you have me feeling intrigued — how or where would I get "the original enumerator's record"? Am I missing a trick?

No, not missing a trick, Michael. I was referring to the original image of the census record, as opposed to a more up to date, transcribed copy or summary, e.g. from FindMyPast etc. The original image , or enumerators copy is the most original source. In a couple of cases , i've found a summary version on FMP not to be completely accurate.

I really, really like the dates that you have in your Notes field - but - how do you create a table in the Notes field?

I just type a new line for each item. You can't do this in Events or Facts, but you can in Notes. As you may notice, I keep the field called Notes for other purposes, and make a new one for 'Dates', which I position among the facts/events as shown. Hope this helps.
