    Uncertain Parent/Child relationship

I was wondering if there is any way to show a relationship where we are uncertain about a parent/child connection.

We know the details of the grandfather (Generation 1) and we know the details of the son (Generation 3). We are unsure which of the sons (Generation 2) of the grandfather is the father of the son.

    (hope that makes sense)

We believe the uncertain person is one of three sons - but we know limited information.

Is there any way to effectively add a "dotted line" presumptive connection?

    Hi,

In Reunion go to > Preferences > Child Status where you can add a new status. Using this method you could then add the description you feel is appropriate. Having done this, then go back to the person in Family View and by right clicking on the child, will bring up a window > Child Status and selecting the entry you want.

I'm not sure it's truly satisfactory, but I would probably enter a fourth son named [Unsure which son is the father] to show the link between grandfather and grandson.

I have made a Child Status called: “<<< NOT PROVED >>>” expressly for this purpose. It is made to stand out in reports and allows me and any future readers of my work to understand precisely that the connection I made is just that – not proven (yet!)

I use two special sources "Unconfirmed Child" and "Unconfirmed Parent". It indicates you have an idea they are related, but you don't know. If the relaionship is confirmed these sources can be replaced with the one confirming the relationship.

You can use Show Usage to find out all of the unconfirmed relationships in your file.

In my file, two boys named Jones grow up among grandparents and descendants named Jones, but no one ever knew who their Jones father was. DNA evidence showed they were actually adopted and additionally showed they were actually Smiths. I did not want to remove them from the family in which they were raised, and I don't know their Smith father, so I created a "son" of the Jones grandparents named "Unknown Smith".

I'm glad this topic came up, because I have been puzzling over some unconfirmed relationships in my own files and wondering what to do.

In the case of one branch, I have linked the family the way that it seems to be- it ALMOST is proved by preponderance of evidence, but not quite. And then in my notes I discuss all the evidence and state that it is not confirmed. I have considered adding a flag for this.

            But here is my question:

I have another family that is most likely related to this one (mother's maiden name found- but not sure exactly which family in the area she is connected to). I am just starting to enter the family in my Reunion tree and am puzzling over how to have them linked in some tentative way. Is there a way in the notes to insert something like a hyperlink- with a statement something like: Her brother is likely John Smith (with John Smith as a clickable link which would bring up his card)??? This would be handy in quite a few of my families.
