To Do List?

I did a quick search and didn't find anything on this topic. It appears Reunion does not have a place to put "To Do" items, a place for notes for future research. Am I wrong?

I believe that most people who want to maintain some form of "To Do" List in Reunion probably use the "Logs" feature.

If you Search for "Logs' in the Help File, it provides some examples. Personally, I prefer to use an 'external' utility, or a simple Notes reminder record.

I have not explored the Logs feature yet, but I'll look into it.

Using logs doesn't allow you to attach the item to a person's record unless you remember to always add the PersonID#.

If you create a fact tag, say "RESEARCH" and add to records, it'll be easier to know who's information you are doing the research. There is no GEDCOM tag but now genealogy programs that use _TODO (custom tag).

Only caveat you can't add as a family research in Reunion (children research, for example), just to an individual.

I've used the Logs feature as suggested by mjashby,an advantage being that a dedicated log provides a single place in the family file to keep track of. However, it seems to me that if it's important to a researcher to have to do lists attached to people, that a custom note could fill the need. There can be custom notes for people and for families.

Tim, I've had trouble doing that because I also use logs as a dated progress report, of sorts. But so far I haven't found a date structure that doesn't get re-ordered by the SORT function. After trying a couple different schemes unsuccessfully (that is, keeping date sequence), I developed a workaround.

Have you found a way to name your logs that keeps your To Do log readily accessible after sorting? What approach do you use?

The workaround is using flags to identify type of work needed, and a To Do note field for the flagged individual with specifics. The Find function produces a list of people "needing work".

Paul, my to do lists are pretty skeletal, and I actually include this stuff in the default user log. I do date the entries I include, but don't think there's any way for any sort function to intrude on this arrangement.

It's very rudimentary, and while I have ideas to do things better, my logs are probably not the best to use as an example.

Tim, that's interesting... you enter the dates in the Log text field itself, not as the Log name? Never thought of that.

If the log entries were put in numerical order that was sequential by date, SORT is no longer needed. But even if it was used, it wouldn't mess up the date order, which would be clearly visible in the Log window.

It would be tedious to get the entries into the right sequence, since they're out of order now, but it only has to be done once.

Still have to figure out how to deal with log entries for which date has no meaning. If we knew how the SORT function handled symbols, text and numbers in the LOGS window, it's possible non-numeric prefixes could be used to create separate types of lists. I didn't find any information about that in HELP.

Tim, that's interesting... you enter the dates in the Log text field itself, not as the Log name? Never thought of that.

Once upon a time, the date was automatically entered when you opened a log. Now, the date will be inserted at the cursor position when you click the calendar icon at the bottom of the log window.
