Date format/Custom Dates

When the year of an event could be 1575 or 1576 what is the best format to use? I only have the years.
I have entered a custom date as 1575/6. Is that the best way to do it?

I would use "1575 or 1576".

I would save "1575/6" for use when indicating an event that took place in the three months where the year differed in places in which the year began in January and places in which the year began in March. (1575 though, is too early for this to be needed.)

But there's no one answer, you just need to decide and be consistent.

Remember when it's not a choice of just two years you can use a date like "between 4 July 1776 and 25 December 1785".
