    Dropbox eliminating Public folder

    Now that Dropbox is ending support for their Public Folder and deactivating the existing links, what is my alternative for posting my information to the web? Sending URLs to individuals is not an alternative as I want the information available to anyone visiting my web page. Is there another option being developed or is there one out there now involving Google Drive or iCloud Drive? I have until March 15 to figure an alternative as the web links will be taken down at that time. Thanks, Pat

    I also have this question. I tried uploading a web report to a different folder in my Dropbox account and "sharing" it as directed by Dropbox. However, as far as I can tell the "link" provided does not open the report directly in a browser as it did in the Public folder. What are the suggestions?

      Sharing files will still operate... Quote from the Dropbox notification email:

      "If you’d like to keep sharing files in your Public folder, you can create new shared links. Just make sure to send the new URLs to your collaborators."

        Hi Bob,
        Thank you for answering! I tried sharing. I created a new folder in my Dropbox account, uploaded the web project, retrieved the link and opened it. The entire project is listed-all the folders. One would have to know to click into index.htm. I also sent the link to a computer that does not have Dropbox. Again the entire folder is listed and the project has to be downloaded, I presume. I didn't do that as I have very limited Internet data (rural). This is pretty complicated for many of the folks who follow my page. Not to mention that I could update my project periodically without having to send new links to everyone using the Public folder. Am I missing something here?

          Tried your link and got to the file OK. However, it wouldn't download. The error message displayed by Dropbox was "The zip file is too large"

          I haven't run across anyone doing a zip file and I am inclined to think that won't work. However, the experts at Leister can answer that question.

            After posting my previous message I tried accessing my file from a public wifi and got the same message.

            So, basically, no online access after September when Dropbox discontinues the public folder, at least for my file. Even if the file could be downloaded, I am not particularly happy with the fact that it has to be downloaded every time there is an update to the file.

              I'm afraid that if you prefer not to use the method of sharing via Dropbox that requires the recipient to download the web project to their system (as outlined in this FAQ), then the only option (as far as we're currently aware) is to obtain web hosting and upload the web project to the website via FTP.

              Note that you'll need to get a host that allows you to upload custom pages -- places like Squarespace or Wix are not going to work as they don't allow uploading of custom web pages.

                I was afraid I was going to get that answer!

                Why am I getting "The zip file is too large"? Is my family file too large? Or am I doing something wrong? I tried following the sharing instructions closely. Or is this a Dropbox question? If it is a matter of a large family file, then Dropbox sharing isn't an option for everyone?

                  Found the following in the Dropbox Help Center:

                  "Download entire folders on dropbox.com

                  You can download the entire contents of a folder from dropbox.com.

                  Note: It's not possible to use dropbox.com to download an entire folder that's over 1 GB or that has over 10,000 files. If the folder is in your account, use the Dropbox desktop application to download the entire folder to your computer automatically." (snipped; read the whole thing at https://www.dropbox.com/help/49)

                  I have used Dropbox for several years and did not know about this limit. My guess is that your zip file exceeds the 1 GB ceiling.

                      I use Weebly, but I'm not sure it will do what you are suggesting, syncing updates. I have a site for each branch and upload Family Group Sheets. I have to update manually with a new FGS if I make changes. And it doesn't create a set of linked person cards.

                        Interesting, thanks. If we exported the cards via Reunion would Weebly be able to host accordingly?

                          I am trying to find a new host for my genealogy website. In view of the limited discussion on ReunionTalk, I assume most of you with websites are not using Dropbox. It would be very helpful for many of us if those successfully using hosts that "allow uploading of custom web pages" and can duplicate <moodylapointe.com> would post the name and contact information of your host(s).                             My file in Dropbox does exceed the 1 GB limit. I could not figure out how to find the size of the zip file. However, I deleted everything and started over with a new uploaded file following exactly the FAQ http://www.leisterpro.com/doc/versio...rs/dropweb.php
                            that Mark suggested. I was able to open the downloaded shared file. I believe the critical words in the FAQ once the file is shared are "allow time for the files to sync"! :P

                            I believe that this whole process is just too complicated for some of the folks who follow my family web project. They are just not that computer savvy. I would like to add my name to those on this thread that are requesting successful host information that will allow uploading a Reunion web project.

                              I have had my Reunion web project on A2 hosting, not free (https://my.a2hosting.com/index.php)
                              since Apple pulled out.
