Import Reunion Family File

Having created a family file from a single source (but without citation), I'm wanting to import this into a new family file in order to automatically apply a source citation to all persons in it. From the new family file, however, as soon as I choose "Import Reunion Family File" the entire program crashes and quits.

Does this happen for anyone else?

I'd rather not convert to GEDCOM and back again for importing, since so many others relate loss of data through that process.

Workaround: creating a person in the new file allows import without crashing, so apparently there needs to be an existing population for an import.

Now I find that the automatic marking can only be a flag, not a source. With the option to import existing sources, my question now becomes whether there is a method for "mass-sourcing" everyone in the original database with the same source number (there are almost 10K individuals, and I definitely don't want to apply the source one person at a time!).

If I'm understanding this correctly, you should be able to do what you want by marking the imported people (by selecting "Mark" from the "Automatic flag/mark" menu in the import family file window). Then, choose Change > Set General Sources to assign a source to those marked people.

If you have already imported the family file without marking them, it is still possible to assign a source to them by following these steps...

1. Open the People sidebar on the right and mark them by using the Mark menu (the green check mark) at the bottom of the People sidebar. I.e., click on the Mark menu and select "Mark Everybody in List."

(Note: if the extra person added to your family file before the import is not wanted, you can unmark that one person by clicking on the green check mark to the left of his/her name.)

2. Then, choose Change > Set General Sources to assign a source to those marked people.

I'm glad you were able to find a workaround. I can't duplicate any problem when importing a Reunion family file into an empty Reunion family file.

Please verify that you are using the most recent version of Reunion 11...version 11.0.11. (This information can be found by choosing Reunion > About Reunion.)

Your "workaround" is not needed. You were in the wrong pew so to speak. If you had gone to the File menu and chosen Import, one of the options is to import an existing Family File.

Thanks, Deb, for the "sidewise" route (actually more direct) of using the Change panel. That accomplished my intended purpose within the original family file without the need for any import/export operations. Now that everyone is easily marked with the original general source, I can simply continue to add/modify in this database with further new sources as well.

And thanks also to Bob White for responding, though the option you mention was actually the one I was attempting. It was choosing "Import Reunion Family File" then selecting the file to import that was causing the crash.

FYI Deb & LeisterFriends: This seems to have been an ephemeral problem, as I cannot now reduplicate it myself.
