    Age at death

    Bonjour,
Is it possible to calculate the age at death from the dates of baptism and burial in the absence of the date of birth and death?

    Merci,

    Michèle

Sure, but just realize it won't be exact. Reunion accepts "about" for dates.

I have instances where baptism was done in batches which distorts calculations.
I myself was christened when I was 10th story goes because the local vicar refused to baptise me because my mother hadn't attended because of absence on War Service.

Whilst you can use approximate dates, broken down by either month or year, the register report gives a definitive age. This causes confusion when it clashes with the actual age (years) when reading the report. Is there someway of placing a caveat in the register report such that if abt., bef., circa or any other approximation (years that does not have a day and month) is used in the birth date or death date it would alert the reader of the approximate age at death.

I have placed a couple of examples below where the age at death given by Reunion is not the actual age at death.

Sample of using unknown death date:
Irene married LLewellyn Jerrett, son of Benjamin Jerrett (1881-) & Selina (surname
unknown) (1887-). Born in Jul 1915 in Carbonear, NL. LLewellyn died bef 2003; he was
        87.

Sample where just years are given which may not be his age at death:
William T. Baldwin. Born in 1927. William T. died in 1994; he was 67.

          Bonjour, Michèle,

It is. You can choose one other field that Reunion refers to if the birth date and/or the death date are absent from the record.

Open the Fields preferences (Reunion->Preferences… and click "Fields"). In the Toolbar, be sure "Person" is selected. In the list "Person Events" at left, choose "Birth". In the bottom-center of the screen, you will see the statement:

If no birth date exists, substitute _____ (with a pop-up menu).

Choose the field you would like to use, such as "Baptism".

You may do the same with the "Death" field.

These seem to be the only two fields that have this special substitution function, but they are also the only ones where such a substitution would make sense.

Hope this helps, and bonne chance!
