I have a person with a double name surname (Jones Smith). I'm looking in the sidebar people list. Instead of it being filed under J, it's being filed under S. Why? That's not correct.

Take a look in the Preferences - there's a setting in the General settings for Name Prefixes and how many characters long for them to be to ignore them.
This is meant for things like van and de, but has apparently caught your Jones too, so that setting must be set to at least 5 (since it's "less than the number". Change it to 4 and see if that fixes it.
