    Fixing family recording error

Well I've really messed up. I have a man who has had two wives. I put the first wives kids with the second wife so I could easily find them. Now my reports look way off and I'd like to move the kids to their proper mother. Is there a way to do this easily? I can't merge them. I tried that and they still showed up in the wrong place. If I delete them out of the wrong place they disappear entirely. I guess I could delete them and reenter it all using a second computer but I'd rather not. Any advice is appreciated.

Here you really do want to *move* the children.

The clipboard is your friend. Open the clipboard. Go to the family with the 2nd wife and all the kids. Drag the kids that don't belong there to the clipboard. Now go to the family with the 1st wife. Drag the kids from the clipboard to the family card (into the "child" area).

    That should fix it.

You can also drag them straight from the index window, without using the clipboard.

Just open the card where you want them to go as children, then open the index window, and drag the people from there into the child area of the destination parents.

You will get an alert saying that they already have parents, and asking if you want to Move or Duplicate. Pick "Move".

"Duplicate" is for situations where you want someone to show up in the child list for two (or more) sets of parents, such as for a person who was adopted, under both the birth parents and the adoptive parents. Usually you then set the Child Status to indicate the sense in which they belong to each family.

Excellent help! Now I have one other problem. Two wives....I mistakenly have the data on one of the children...and their family...with both wives. How do I eliminate the man and his downline from the wrong wife of his father? He only shows up once in the index. Thanks

If you go to the Family Card of his father and the wrong wife, you should see him linked as a child to that card (based on your description) -- drag-and-drop his entry from the children list to the Clipboard icon at the top of the Family Card window. This will unlink him from the Family Card (but he will remain linked to the appropriate Family Card).

Thanks that really helped. It's taking me forever to figure this out on my own!

              Re: Fixing family recording error

My question is similar to the first one asked
I attached a child to a first marriage rather than the second marriage
I removed the details from the first entry and retyped it in the second
Problem is that for the first marriage I have a box showing an unnamed child that is blank
How do I get rid of this blank box. I hesitate deleting anything

Since what you want to do is to delete the box, hesitating to do so isn't going to help you.

Drag the child box to the clipboard. Empty the clipboard. Enjoy a victory drink.

If you had not re-entered the child, you could have dragged him from the first marriage card to the clipboard, gone to the 2nd marriage card, and dragged him from the clipboard to the child area on that card. (And so not have had to delete anything).

But by creating a second record for the child, you created the need to delete the first (blanked) record.
