How do we get access to the additional web search routines that Keith has done? Sounds like great work and I would like to be able to use them.

Do they get added into Application Support > Reunion > Search Engine folder. Any other steps?

Thank you very much Keith and everyone else who is contributing to the list!

Yes - just download the ".plist" files and place them in that folder. Note that you'll need to restart Reunion 10 in order for it to pick them up.

Holy cow! Read through all the messages again and looked around on the Reunion site....

Mark: From where are we downloading the .plist files?

Sorry! I thought Keith had linked to downloads of the ones he created. If he puts them up somewhere you can download them from there, otherwise, look to see them included in a future update to Reunion 10 (he's e-mailed them to us for inclusion).

              Bob,

The creation of additional webs searches is not covered in the manual as they can not be created from within Reunion. They exist as .plist files as as such are not really going to be suitable for everyone to create. That said, I was able to figure out the required structure to create additional .plist files (albeit with a little guidance from Mark), and I know of at least one other user who has also created their own searches. I will gladly create some instructions based on what I know (though I don't profess to be an expert in this area). Give me a day or two to cobble something together.

As for what to do with the ones created. I would have thought their use was pretty self explanatory. To my knowledge the standard searches provided with v10.0.0 has no instructions for use beyond how to run them. Likewise I had not thought it necessary to provide explicit detail on the use of the ones I have created so far (of which only two are directly available via upgrade to v10.0.2. All others are yet to be distributed. I hope in time that the Reunion folks will provide an area to share these more easily but in the meantime I will endeavour to find somewhere to share these files from and get back to you.

Sorry if this thread has gotten a little long, I am just an advocate of the new web search function and wanted to make people aware of the searches I have created so as not to reinvent the wheel.

If anyone should be interested in copies of the searches feel free to mail me and I will gladly send copies along until I get something better in place.

                  Re: Search the Web feature

We are making some changes to the "Search the Web" feature in Reunion 10.0.3, our next maintenance update, that will...

                  * make it easier for all Reunion 10 users to update their search sites for the "Search the Web" feature (these updates will be independent of the maintenance updates to Reunion itself)

                  * make it easier for those technically inclined to create and contribute new search sites

                  * provide more flexibility, organization, and preferences for searching.

                  More details coming soon.

Many thanks to Reunion user Keith Bage for his efforts in pushing this feature along and helping spark interest.

                    Frank,

This is fantastic news!! I look forward to seeing and hearing more on these developments (especially the introduction of additional flexibility and preferences).

I only wish I knew prior to taking up the gauntlet and spending the afternoon producing a 6 page document trying to describe the creation process I was about to post this along with a link to my web searches but will hold off until more info is forthcoming on v10.0.3

Of course if you need a beta tester for these features you now where to look

It's really good to know you guys are continuing to advance these already great features with each incremental release (web searching, maps etc).

                      Re: Search the Web Function

For those of you who have been following this (rather lengthy) thread on the Web Searching feature in Reunion 10. You should note that Reunion 10.0.3 has now been released with significant improvements to the Web Searching functionality. I urge you to review the Reunion manual and to check out these excellent new features.

Reunion 10.0.3 also distributes the numerous web searches that I have created and made reference to within this thread, so by upgrading you will automatically receive these searches (no longer any need to contact me directly).

For those technically minded and interested in creating your own Web Searches I have created a technical guide which you can find on the Reunion 10 Support Page's Frequently Asked Questions section (question 4), or you can download it directly from here.

If I am a member of Ancestry.com, how do I search using my signed in ID so I can add to Reunion at the same time, or right before I add a person or information to Reunion?

                          Jeni,

Ancestry.com should remember your user ID when you login so that when you perform a search you will be logged in already. This is certainly the case for me.

Thank you very much for the ID answer. What I don't seem to understand now is how to automatically download the information and source from Ancestry.com into Reunion.

And - is there a way in this forum to be notified via email when there are replies on a topic of interest (I did not see Additional Options until I read another post - so now I know how to be notified of replies).

I think you misunderstand what the web searches can do. They enable you to find information on web sites, but they do not 'retrieve' this information into Reunion. You have to manually key in any information you find.
