As for the databases, you're very welcome to have a copy of mine but they're in Filemaker, not Bento. If you don't have Filemaker, you can download a demo version to see if it fits your needs. Bento is much easier to use but doesn't have the search capabilities of Filemaker.
Good luck and let me know if you'd like examples of the databases

Well I have taken the plunge and registered with the Guild as a member and also registered the surname of Fair and its variant Faire. The more I looked at the Guild's website the more I wanted to get involved!
Thanks Jane for the offer of the databases, I have decided to stick with Bento for now and am busy constructing a database for my one name study.

How exciting Andrew! Just FYI I knew a Fahr, pronounced Fair, in California, German name. I don't suppose related to Fair? Or maybe? Something for your back burner.

Do you know if many other ONS folks are using Reunion than the three of you?

Count me in for one - Doogood and variants.

But I have the advantage that a high proportion of them are one family!

However, Reunion is excellent for storing the bits and pieces that are not (yet?) linked, with their sources and notes as appropriate.

How do I add a new family to my ONS file when it's not attached to any other, like the bits and pieces you mention, so I'm not attaching to a pre-existing person in the file?

                Thanks in advance, Martha

Follow the path Edit > Add unrelated Person.

I'd really recommend taking some time out to read through the manual. You'll pick up a wealth of good tips.

Good advice. I've actually been using it a lot. Very impressive. And I'd even looked for this but somehow didn't see it! Need my glasses checked I guess lol!

Re: Reunion and One Name Studies

At the beginning of this thread and until very recently, I could not understand why one would need something like Bento to record a one name family. But finally the penny dropped, and I think what all of you mean is taking one name and trying to relate everyone to the same family. I actually do have a proven one name family: all HIM[M]ELHOCHs worldwide come from one progenitor and all are blood cousins. From the very first, I just put all of them into my Reunion database and after some years was able to find the uniting factor that proved them related. I did not need any outside help from spreadsheets - Reunion was perfect for my one name family needs.

                        Martha,

Its a question of finding the right tools for you and your study, which is why there really is no "one way" to do a one-name study. Your HIM[M]ELHOCH name is clearly a very rare instance and can be managed pretty easily. In the UK there are just two Birth's registered from 1837-2006. However consider someone doing a study on say ATTWOOD, there are 16,487 births in comparison to your 2, with a further 12000 Marriages and 11000 deaths. So you see that things start to become a little more complicated and its hard to see the relationships and reconstruct families here. Its also very likely that there is no one source of a name. Imagine a patronymic name like DAVIDSON, there would be many points of origin for such a name.

So, I hope you see there is a need for other tools and databases for some folks.

                        Regards

                        Keith

Absolutely, Keith! As I said in my post, it took a while for the penny to drop, for me to realize that what was being searched here was the connection among many families of the same name, but not necessarily of the same origin.
