I wrote to the help desk a couple of days ago and I thought someone might be interested in what I learnt:

My message:
I find it annoying that when I open the sidebar my main page moves over to the left, but when I close the sidebar the main page doesn't return to where I originally had it on my screen.

Mark's reply:
Are you opening the sidebar by holding down the Option key when you click on the icon to open the sidebar?
If so, you should also hold down the Option key when clicking to hide the sidebar.
