    Sync Reunion with Ancestry.com

I note in the recent Ancesty.com blog that it is possible to sync it with Family Tree Maker. Is this an option with Reunion?

The only way to move data between Ancestry.com and Reunion is via GEDCOM upload/download.

Family Tree Maker is developed by the company that owns Ancestry.com, and they don't allow third-party applications to interface/sync with their database.

One way to keep ancestry.com somewhat up to date is delete your existing tree on ancestry.com and re-load with a new GEDCOM created in Reunion - I call it "dump & load". Only downside is that ancestry puts new "leaves" on your new tree which if you use you need to delete.

Also, it seems to take weeks for Ancestry to get around to updating their index so it doesn't pick up hits from your old, deleted tree.

And, of course, the sources and notes fields won't make it to Ancestry from Reunion.

Thanks for your replies. If I reload by GEDCOM don't I lose all my attachments such as pictures, sources, notes etc? Also seems the 'hints' need to be checked and edited again so its not a good solution for Reunion users.

Yes -- what we usually recommend, to get the data from Ancestry back into Reunion, is to import the GEDCOM into an empty Family File, mark the new/changed entries, then import the marked entries into your current file (after making a backup of it). Then, use Match & Merge People to merge the existing and new entries together.

While that's true, there's simply no other option we can offer - unless Ancestry.com were to allow third-party applications to directly interface with their databases the way FTM does.
