I've just set up Reunion 10, loaded a GEDCOM from my old Legacy program and am having some issues with Documents and Pictures in the Sources and/or Multimedia fields. In addition to the GEDCOM, I also added files to my 'genealogy' folder entitled 'Docs' (data representing various events - about 2,000 items), and some 3500 photos into 'Pictures'.

All 1,020 of my 'sources' were uploaded but I am concerned that the data contained in them is not viewable unless I re-create the entire 1,020 sources in reunion format and re-attach them to each person they affect. One of the confusing parts is that all the 'sources', once the GEDCOM was installed, reflect all these sources as 'Free Form', but when I try to open them, they do not contain the data from the 'source' I am used to seeing. I think I have figured out how to get pictures into the Multimedia files, but are the 'Docs' to be added to the Multimedia as well as the pictures? I'm floundering as you can see, but I do not seem to find answers that I am seeking in the tutorials and would appreciate it if someone would point me to the section that would clear up my confusion or give me some advice on how to clean up the data and pictures from my GEDCOM upload.

OK - 101 views, no replies - can someone at least advise if Pictures and Documentation (i.e., my sources) are both to be loaded into the 'multimedia' as one large group after installing the GEDCOM I brought over from LEGACY?

I wasn't really clear on the question either, but it sounds as if you had reference photos or scans linked to your sources in Legacy, and they are no longer linked after your data is imported into Reunion.

Roger is very qualified to help on this and I'd recommend you take him up on his offer. My first question if I understand the basis of your question is whether or not Legacy includes paths for files linked to sources in a gedcom export (upon further review, as Roger asked). If so, I don't know if Reunion would recognize them. If it does, perhaps putting your reference files in your Reunion Picutures folder on your Mac and running Repair Multimedia from Reunion->Preferences->Multimedia might be enough to fix things for you. Otherwise, you may need to relink all the reference files manually.

I've looked over the GEDCOM file, and as far as I can see Reunion has imported it all about as well as can be expected in its default state - the Media liked to sources were imported, and most, but not all of the source fields were imported.

It might be more a matter of not knowing just where to look to see that this information was imported.

I sent back some screenshots showing what I saw.

Many thanks to Roger for his assistance. He pointed out that the files were uploaded via GEDCOM pretty much as Reunion 10 advertises and provided me some good guidance.

The problem I now face is a long long long clean-up period to remove extraneous items from the 'free-form text' items that were brought over from Legacy. That field contains 'stuff' that needs to be removed and/or re-worded. In addition, I have discovered that if I want my Documentation and Multimedia to be accessible (i.e., to be viewable or accessible in Reunion 10), that another huge cleanup is in store on those two items. Some of the data is accessible, but some of it did not get posted from the GEDCOM - whether bad data in Legacy or my old entries. I have a large winter project ahead of me. Isn't it great to have a goal!

I'm pretty impressed with what I have discovered thus far in Reunion and have found many exciting details but have a long way to go.

One thing I didn't point out in the eMails, but which could potentially cause a future problem is that I noticed that many of your file names are things like

4 FILE \1363-02 BROWN GEORGE-JOHN BROWN-DESCENDANTS .pdf

where there is a space after the file name before the .pdf - i.e. the file name ends in a space.

I have seen issues with this where when this file is uploaded by FTP to a site the site will replace the trailing space with an underscore which breaks the link between your datafile and the actual file.

So you might want to review all your file names to at the very least remove trailing spaces and then relink them in Reunion, and perhaps even more ideally remove all the spaces if you think there's any chance you might be going to at some stage publish your genealogy online.

Good point - those were placed there a long time ago in order to use the space as an Excel ''text to columns' feature I was using at the time. I'll correct these as time permits - I doubt I will publish an online genealogy, but one never knows.
