Sending a Family File as an email attachment

I recently tried sending a copy of two different family files (Reunion10) as attachments of an email message (Gmail account). Both failed to attach to message, though two Pages documents did work. I turned the Reunion10 files into Gedcom and sent them that way.

It would have been easier for the recipient (and me) if I could have sent the family files.

Any suggestions as to why this should happen, and a solution perhaps?

Many Internet service providers limit the size of attachments. You need to look at the size of the family files. While I only have 7000 people in my family file, I have a lot of multimedia aliases and many, many notes and source citations. The file is 22.5 mb. This file will not go via email, even if I compress the file.

Since you did not mention the size of the file; you should check the size of the file.

As Bob suggests, size may be the explanation; it might also be that Gmail won't let you attach a file of other than certain specific types (permitting gif, jpg, txt, pdf, zip, but not familyfile). A possible solution to either of these problems might be to "zip" the file before trying to send it.

A better solution, whatever the problem was, might be to use Dropbox to exchange family files. That way you'd only have to send the link to the family file on Dropbox within the e-mail itself.

Just checked Gmail help.. their max size is 25 MB and file types are not even mentioned.

While Gmail may have the 25mb limit, this is also part of Gmails help about file size: "Please note that you may not be able to send larger attachments to contacts who use other email services with smaller attachment limits."

Jay Kay did not indicate the ISP email to which the file was being sent.

However, I am glad you mentioned the 25 MB size. I did not think files that large could be sent as attachments even between Gmail accounts.

I do like the idea of Dropbox suggested by Dennis.
