problem creating a GedCom file for Ancestry.com

After years of lurking on Ancestry, I've finally decided to upload my family file. I didn't want to include anyone living, so I created a marked set marking only my grandparents and their ancestors. When I created a GedCom, I checked the box to include only marked people, and to use privacy filtering, but when I opened the Gedcom, all of my grandparents descendents were included. How can I create a Gedcom that doesn't include living people?

In other words, when I create the Gedcom, it's including people who aren't marked even though I'm checking "marked people and their spouses." Why are unmarked people showing up?

    thanks,
    Adrian

I believe that you see them because it is your family tree and you are viewing from within your own account. Have someone else try to view your tree, not with your account, and I'm pretty sure these marked people will display a box titled "Living".....

      Hi, Bob,

Thanks for responding. After I created the Gedcom, I made a new family file and imported the Gedcom into it, just to see what it would look like, but everyone was there. Do you think if I email it to someone else and have them open it, the unmarked people won't be there?

      Thanks,
      Adrian

        Adrian,

I do a FIND in Reunion to get only people born after 1940 and mark them, then Export the GED with "Who: Marked People and their Spouses" checked on the Export screen. That effectively eliminates the people I didn't want included from my GED file. What you say you are doing - marking only your grandparents and above and unmarking everyone below them, should work the same way.

If you open the GED file in a text editor you can search through it to confirm that the people you didn't want are not in it. If they are, go back into Reunion and see if any of those people got marked somehow when they shouldn't have been.

Note that, if you have a married couple with one who is marked and one who isn't, Reunion will export BOTH to the GED whether you like it or not. Also be sure the "and their children" box is unchecked.

I think I need to go at this in a different way. I'm trying to create a Gedcom of my father's ancestors, and their descendants etc, excluding my father and his generation. I can't seem to mark them without getting all of my mother's ancestors and relatives in there as well.

I started with my paternal grandfather and checked "mark everyone linked to [grandfather]," then I went in and manually unchecked all the descendants of my grandparents that I didn't want to include, but I still get my mother's whole side of the family, myself, and my nieces nephews and inlaws.

Is there a better way to go about this? Lots of my 19th century ancestors married more than once and had multiple families which I want to include. If I just check "ancestors of [grandfather]" I'm not going to get all those other half-relatives.

          thanks,
          Adrian

I was just able to do what you want (I think).

I navigated to my father and from the mark panel (left column of buttons) marked all his blood relatives. Then I unmarked all his descendants. None of my mom's relatives are marked and all his ancestors and their descendants appear to be marked. Spouses of blood relatives didn't get marked, but they will get exported during the GED export anyway if their spouse is marked.

(linked-to marks everyone that has ANY sort of connection - even through marriage(s) - to the person you are on. So it would mark everyone in your file except those that are isolated "islands" in your database. If you don't have any "free radicals" in your database then it would mark everyone in the entire database.)

              Hi, Don,

I think my version might be corrupted or something. I tried doing what you suggested by checking "blood relatives" for each of my grandparents and then unchecking everyone in my father's and my generation manually. When I exported it into a new family file, I showed up with no parents or siblings, and some, but not all of my grandfathers siblings were there, even though I made sure all of his siblings were checked. Something is weird. I think I need to call LeisterPro.

Thanks for your help - I appreciate it!
