I had not known of the existence of the quick bar until I read this post. I have a quick bar, but there are no icons in it. Surely I don't have to drag each person into the quick bar, do I? If I click on the pencil icon on the left, I have options (Hide, Text, Text & Icon - which is checked), but there are no icons in the quick bar. Excuse me if this is a really dumb question, but ...

    Thanks,

The quickbar is for those selected persons you want the very easiest access to. So, the answer is yes, you need to drag each person to the quickbar, but in concept it should be a fairly restricted set of people.

Thanks! Now that I know what it is for, I'll keep the Quick Bar's function in mind. I don't have any particular person that I access most often in mind right now, but that could easily change.

        Thanks,

        Jeff

            Re: Quickbar

Hello all. I thought I would add a note to this thread.
I have been using quick bar on my family file with great success.
It is a valuable shortcut and it works like this for me >
I have several 'extra marriages' couples with children etc on each partner.
When I need to access the 'other' wife to reveal their family it is easy, just one click.
Then the reverse, or to go from one wife to the other.
With the trend to more than one marriage or partnership these days, there is even more 'need' for this shortcut.
Much faster and less mistakes in operation.
Extra quick bar 'couples' are added as needed or wanted.

Also - Especially useful and quicker this way to access an important earlier ancestor couple.
I have not found an easier way.
I now wonder why this feature has not been tried more widely?
To test, just try dragging a marriage of wife #1 and then wife#2.
            How? Check the help manual!

Then - Just click from one to the other.
Try another (any early ancestral couple).
Switching this way is just so much easier.
            Thank you Reunion staff.

The Quickbar is fully described in the Help manual, which I recommend using as ones FIRST place of seek help. In this case, simply search for the obvious word:
              quickbar

Yes, I looked in the Help manual. I overlooked this sentence, though:

"The quickbar is limited to 50 entries."

It would be helpful if the Help manual was more helpful.

Sorry to make an example out of you Jeff, but occasionally the board needs to reinforce newer users to take advantage of available documentation resources too, i.e. the Help feature.

As for this earlier post referenced here, all of this IS EXPLAINED in the help page for "Quickbar", once you realized that is the name to search for. Hence my disbelief that you visited the help page.

Again, sorry to be picking on you.

Don't forget the Option-H and Option-W shortcuts for quickly switching among the multiple spouses. No need to preload them into the Quickbar.

And... it would even more helpful if we had a printed manual (a perennial wish - I have an old printed manual, but have pretty much given up hope of Leister ever printing one again - reminds me a bit of Apple - where they are kind enough to redo software and hardware and then tell me that's way I want it [I often don't]). I love Leister - but really am frustrated over the lack of a printed manual.

A quick suggestion to those who wish/prefer a printed manual.
                        Sorry,

It ain't gonna happen. They are out of date by the time you need it.
I would never return to the OLD days of printed materials for ANY software.

No my present method is to use my old iPad #1 setup the reunion help screen and use that with my iMac. That avoids the constant (at times) referring back and forth onscreen.
                        Don't have an iPad?
The old ones should be cheap to buy, or use a macbook - setup as mentioned.
Plus the note app built in to iPads is very useful.

                        Happy hunting

By now this thread has gone off in multiple directions and now is probably of little help to the original poster. Hopefully the Reunion staff have been able to isolate the Quickbar problem and is working on a fix.

But in response to the perennial request for a printed manual…
If it is so really important to you to have a printed manual you can print all the Help pages yourself. See this thread to see how to do that:
                          --> http://www.reuniontalk.com/showthread.php?t=6277
But a strong feature about an online manual, in addition to always being up-to-date, is the ability to search it using ad hoc query terms. You cannot do this with a printed manual.

                            Re: Quickbar

Oh - I know how great on-line help pages are and that you can quickly search them --- but you have to know what you're searching for. For example, who would know to search for all the intricacies of Quickbar if you didn't know that it existed. THAT'S why I would like a manual - you can skim it (you cannot skim the help pages) and see what's in the program.

And... Yes, I know it's beyond hope looking for a printed manual. And I have no intention to try to print out help pages -a terrible substitute for a printed manual - not to mention a great cost of toner/ink.

Well- you all go back and love your help pages - and I shall go on wishing for the impossible.

You can. Open the manual (hit any "?" icon), then hit links from the page you wind up on, or hit the table of contents icon in the help window and click randomly. Or enter any subject that interests you; enter any specialized term you find on that page in the search box and read away.
