    Family tree Windows-Ancestry-Reunion

I am now on Mac Mt Lion. My Windows XP 2002 is fried, but I had a portable backup.

I have trees in Ancestry.com (most I am co-editor with my sibling.) My software was FTM windows 2006. I never updated to new versions.

The Apple customer service assisted in transferring from my backup to my Mac so know I see something with Ftw extension on the Mac.

I think I want to purchase Reunion. What must I do to have my information downloaded into Reunion preferable from my Ftw extension; or maybe from Ancestry.com?

I am not technical. Any help for me? Is Reunion doable for me? Thank you in advance.

    Hi Kathy,
To the best of my knowledge, Reunion will not be able to read the Family Tree Maker (ftw) file but it is possible to export a GEDCOM file from Ancestry which can be imported into Reunion.

In Ancestry, go to manage trees and click on Export tree (to the right) and then click on download your GEDCOM file (it takes afew seconds to generate it) and save that file to your hard drive. In Reunion, click on File > Import > GEDCOM and follow the prompts.

I just tried this for a tree I have in Ancestry, and all sources are saved as free form, all information appears ok. When you import a GEDCOM file into Reunion, click on optional fields and review - this gives you a chance to change descriptions and Tags if you wish, e.g. Employment will come in as "*New [_EMPLOY]" (without the quotes) but you can manually edit this.

If you wish to use your FTW file, Ancestry.com forums suggest
"You can download a free Family Archive viewer from http://www.genealogy.com/abtffiv.htm...ome=1047242877
You will be able to view the Family Tree Maker file and export it to GEDCOM"
But this requires having a windows PC and not sure on . I haven't tried it so maybe I would recommend using a GEDCOM from Ancestry or using a friend's PC to use the Family Archive Viewer (http://www.genealogy.com/abtffiv.htm...ome=1047242877). This program supports all versions of Family Tree Maker between 4 and 16 (2006).

If that is not possible, using a Crossover trial which allows to run some WIndows programs on a Mac, refer http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibi...e/?app_id=2897. This can be more involved and the link will show no comments or medals (compatibility ranking) so it may not have been tried by other people.

These are some options for you to consider.

    Regards,
    PC

My error in typing, the GEDCOM tag can not be changed from the optional fields. This is not a problem but the description can be altered which is what you see on the screen

To start with purchasing Reunion is the right decision. In any event, I think, it is unlikely that any other application will be able to retrieve your data by any means other than the following suggestions.

There are a few things you can do to retrieve your data, the easy one is to get a gedcom of your file, if your siblings have it on their machines they can create one very easily, if they don't have it you could ask if there is anyone who has FTM who would mind creating a gedcom, you could check with Ancestry.com and enquire if you can retrieve it from there.

I have a copy of FTM 8 I keep for such occasions, if you need any assistance you can contact me off list at darkwood@me.com

You can change GEDCOM tags in the GEDCOM file itself (GEDCOM format is just ordinary plain text in a structured language) before doing the import, using the batch "find and replace" function of any text editor.

I like BBEdit for plain text editing, but the Mac's built-in TextEdit also does batch find and replace.

If you are willing to send the FTW file to us, we should be able to convert it to a Reunion 10 Family File.

Depending on the size, you could either attach it to an e-mail addressed to help@leisterpro.com or, if too large to send via e-mail, use a large file sending service such as http://www.mailbigfile.com to send it.

Note that the conversion would be free with your purchase of Reunion 10.

            Hope that helps,

Slightly off topic, I am using Text Wrangler and use Apple scripting for converting Gedcom files from Reunion. What advantages are there with BBEdit?

Text Wranger is better in my humble opinion. :-)

Probably none for this purpose - TextWrangler is the free baby brother of BBEdit - TextWrangler has less features than BBEdit, but plenty enough to manipulate GEDCOM files with.
