    Place of Birth memo field

I have the children buttons in family view set up as a list instead of the default (Reunion > Preferences > Family View > Children > Show buttons in a list). I like this display because I can add and remove fields for research purposes. Currently, I have Birth & Death Dates, Age, Spouse, Child Status and a field that I created, Place of Birth Memo. I can't seem to figure out where to enter information for the Place of Birth Memo field. I tried entering the place of birth in the memo field at the right side of the birth field in Person > Events but nothing showed up in the Birth Place column when I went back to Family View.

Where do I enter the information in Reunion so that it shows in the Birth Place Memo field that I created?

What I'm doing is tracking the movement of families by the births of their children. If one child was born in, say, Fayette County, PA and the next was born in Hamilton County, Ohio, I have a good idea of when the family moved. With a quick click, I can then compare different families and use that information to plot further research ideas.

    Thanks!

This is not completely intuitive but you need to add two birth fields to the family view layout. Drag one so they're adjacent. Click on the lower one, and click the memo only box.

I'm not sure why you need a Place of birth memo for the children's list. If you go to Preferences>Family View>Children and "Add Field"-Events>Birth, you have some choices-click on "Place" and it will change "Birth Event" to "Birth Place". It will then show the b.place you have entered on the child's card. The Events>Birth (or Death) can be used multiple times to set up various kinds of info.

I do this for both birth & death places. I use: Married Name, Age, Birth Date, Birth Place, Death Date, Death Place, Status and Relationship.

Love the "Married Name" for females. Shows the "preferred married name" but that's okay. The red triangle tells me if there is more than one.

Thanks, Tim. I think I had clicked on a link to some other site where you were the reference but when I followed what I thought I read, it didn't turn out like I expected. I had it in my little pea-brain that "memo" meant that you could type something into the box and I couldn't do that. But it's no longer necessary - see my reply to Kaye, below.

        Thanks,

        Jeff

Bingo!! Yes, your suggestion is exactly what I was looking for. I guess the incredible number of options in Reunion had me all confused. But listing the children instead of accepting the default Reunion selection and then setting up columns for different types of information is the cat's meow. Thanks for explaining your setup in plain English.

I hadn't previously thought of adding a "Married Name" field, but now that I have, I see some quirkiness. Reunion lists, apparently by default, the surname of the male parent for any unmarried child as the "Married Name". So you have the weirdness of an unmarried male or female child with the "Married Name" of his/her father. Logic would dictate that if the child is unmarried, then the "Married Name" column for that person would be empty. But logic escapes me more and more these days!

            Thanks,

            Jeff

It's actually listing that persons surname as their married name - though, in most cases that would be the same as the male parents surname.

If you search "married name" (no quotes) in the Manual and read the entry titled "The Married Name Field", it explains, in detail, how the contents of this field are determined.

I put up with the quirkiness of the male's "married name" just to have the female's "married name"

Also, I use "married name" instead of "spouse" because mn takes up less space.
