    Importing from ancestry.com.au

I have just recently bought Reunion 10 and imported a gedcom file for one of my family trees from ancestry.com.au to start with.

I have found that many sources have been assigned to people that are completely irrelevant. For e.g., the 1901 census attached to someone who died 10 years earlier. There are loads of mistakes like this.

Is this something to do with the gedcom file? I have made a back-up copy, deleted all the sources in the copy and am now creating my own source list and attaching the relevant multimedia to each one. Initially, I will just go back through the direct line rather than all the uncles, aunts, etc.

Is this a problem others have found? Is there a quicker way of solving this problem without going down the path I have chosen?

An easy way to check where the error occurred is to open your tree on ancestry and look at the sources saved against that person on their site. Is the offending 1901 census there? Did you copy info from another ancestry tree into yours? If so, you've copied their sources too. You may find the error to be on your ancestry tree which you then imported not due to the data being mixed up on import.

Personally I always key info into my database, double checking everything as I do. Yes it's time consuming but I figure my family's history is worth the effort

I don't fully understand what's happened. Each person who is in the 1901 census has the correct one attached to it in ancestry, but in Reunion it seems to be the one that is relevant to one family member is attached to all. I started to make changes in Reunion, so maybe I have done something wrong in my initial ignorance.

I may try to import the gedcom file to a new family tree and see what happens.

      Thank-you for you reply.

I have just re-imported to find the 1901 census attached to quite a few family members. But in the Details field they have a different page number!

But when I add the multimedia (the file I actually downloaded from ancestry) for one person, it appears in the source for all people with this source.

How can I get around this?

This is because you are adding the multimedia item to the source, not the source citation.

Each person has their own citation, which includes the detail field with the page number you're seeing, but they are all citing the same source (if you open the Source sidebar this will probably be more clear) and you are adding the multimedia item to that shared source.

How can I get around this?
You would either need to go through and create a different source for each person, and add their multimedia to that source, or you would need to add the multimedia to the person's multimedia instead of to the source.

          I hope this helps,

Yes I understand what you are saying.

Another thought I had was could the multimedia for everyone in the 1901 census be added to this one source? As long as I had the files named with the name of the person it would just be a matter of scrolling through to find the correct file for that person?

Yes - sorry, I should have made that clear. You can have multiple multimedia items per source.
