Yep, most of the OpenOffice developers got fed up with Oracle's management of the old project, took a copy ('fork') of the code, and founded LibreOffice.

Oracle then gave the remnants of the project and brand name to Apache. Apache has a small team continuing development and the OpenOffice brand name is still popular.

NeoOffice is based on the OpenOffice code. It was invaluable before OpenOffice had an official Mac port, but is pretty much redundant now, and struggling to remain solvent and relevant.

Superficially the three products are similar, but LibreOffice is getting way more attention in terms of bug fixes and regular releases, and has a much brighter future than the other two.

I have Mavericks 10.9.1 on my 2009 iMac and OpenOffice works fine with it.

      Haven't tried LibreOffice.

I've been using LibreOffice for quite a while now. It's better than the old Open Office (IMHO). Supports .rtf, too, along with many other formats.

I've done some development work with reading RTF and I'm (unfortunately) all too well aware that the standard has languished. So I'd be rather surprised if Apple bothers paying too much attention to RTF support. As I said, I know for certain that the RTF content *does* include the Page number as output by Reunion, so I guess I'll just need to look at getting another application to use instead of Pages or TextEdit.
Take a look at Nisus Writer. I've had no problems with it (that weren't my fault), it is very easy to use and very powerful, does things like right to left text entry. Super powerful find/replace. You can get a free evaluation program at their website. They are to word processing what Reunion is to genealogy.

First, page numbers in RTF documents are dynamically generated by the program processing the RTF. So Reunion will generate a header and a footer, with an anchor for where a page number should go, but the page numbers would be inserted by the word/text processor according to its capability.

As discussed, TextEdit and Pages (4.x) do not process/display the header and footer in a Reunion generated RTF. TextEdit does not show a header or footer even in "wrap to page" format view, but TextEdit will generate its a header and footer on printed output (paper or PDF), complete with the generated page numbers, if you chose the option "Print header and footer" in the Print dialog. It is a very obscure option that I keep overlooking...

In Pages 4.x, to add page numbers, select Insert -> Auto Page Numbers

              Re: Reports with page numbers?

I've published a Family History book, incorporating TOC, page numbering and the usual other items. I now wish to expand it due to new and/or corrected information. The latest "Pages" requires an almost complete rewrite due to changes. I note the responses regarding other word processor programs, but they failed to discuss the incorporation of photos. With "Pages" it was easy to drag photos into the manuscript from iPhoto. I realize I'm drifting from the Reunion question, but do any of these programs easily incorporate photos?

I haven't worked with OpenOffice for very long. Just did a quick test. Although I couldn't drag & drop my photos from iPhoto (although you may be able to and I just wasn't doing it correctly), I was able to copy & paste them. You can resize and do other things to the photos once they are in the document. You can also wrap text.

OpenOffice also allows you to add page numbers and make a TOC, alphabetical index and bibliography. I have not done these.

Since they're free, I would recommend downloading either OpenOffice or LibreOffice (or both) and take a look, especially at their help menu.

I glanced at Nisus Writer Express ($45) & Nisus Writer Pro ($80) on the Mac App Store and their website. Looks like you can download demo versions from the website. They both look wonderful...for professional or semi-professional writers. Plus, they are only word processors. I like OpenOffice because (besides being free) it has enough on it's word processor for the little I do when Pages doesn't have what I need and it has all the other programs similar to Excel, etc. which help me when I have to open a MS Office document, spreadsheet, etc.

These are my opinions. Hope they are helpful.
