    adding a biological child given up at birth, showing up later

    my brother had a child by a teenage girlfriend that was immediately given up for adoption. 30 years later she has shown up in our lives, and is lovely. i'd like to add her to the tree, but she is not the daughter of his spouse in the tree, he was never married to the mother, and if I have to add her mother to the tree, the only thing i see as choices for adding the mother is to click his name and "add spouse". there is no choice of "add girlfriend". how should this be handled? just add the mother as a separate person? if so, how do i link that she is the child of both my brother and her mother? thank you.

    Hi,

    Not sure if this helps in your circumstances, but if you go the manual > Step-children and further down to Adopted children, there could be a suggestion as to how best to handle such an entry.

    An extract from the manual;
    "A child should be entered in a family showing his biological or adoptive parents. Normally, step-children and biological children are not displayed in the same family. Step-children of one couple are really the biological children of another couple, and, in Reunion, are entered and displayed that way."

      Thank you Alan - yeah, I tried adding her as a separate person, and then dragging my brother into her "father" field, but then it wants to make my brother's wife as her mother, and that is not the case. And I can add her mother, but it won't let me link my brother to her without saying he was "a spouse" of her mother, which he wasn't. Reunion needs to upgrade to the times!

        The "spouse" terminology is a little confusing, but once two people are linked, you have the option of changing their relationship to "unmarried", "common law", "civil union", or "domestic partnership".

        You should link her mother and your brother, use the pull-down "marriage" menu to change the link to "unmarried", and add their child to their family card.

            one more question, after I have done that, and then click "tree view", how do I get his wife and kids to show up along with the unmarried mother and daughter? it seems i can only have one family in "tree view", it doesn't show both his wife and the girlfriend and all his children.

              The tree view is centered on the family card that is visible when you go to that view. So if you start with man & wife, they will be shown, and if you start with man and girlfriend, they will be.

              But if you click on one of the man's parents, the tree view will refocus on them, and you should see everyone mentioned (man, wife, girlfriend, and all the man's children) as descendants.
