My Textedit shows plain text when it opens .rtf files. Make sure that "Ignore rich text commands" (a check box on the open file dialog in Textedit) is *NOT* checked.

I've always used MS Word. As long as your word processor isn't Pages, there shouldn't be a problem.

There are certainly free or very low cost word processors for the Mac that you could use.

Re: Cannot send my reports to Pages

You're right...pretty messy. It was pretty late (early?) for me and I wasn't thinking well.

Per TX Researcher, I'd go the TextEdit route. Don't know why it won't work for you.

Forget changing the preferences. Here's what I just did for a register report...Once I clicked on Register, under Reports in the left sidebar, I set up my parameters for the report. Then, next to Destination:, I clicked on the arrows & chose Text File. The last button should now say Save Text File. Clicked on Save Text File. That brought up the Finder Window. Named the report, keeping the .rtf designation. In the left sidebar, chose where I wanted the file to go. I just clicked once on "Desktop". Clicked the Save button in the lower right of the window. Reunion created the report & put it where I indicated.

Go find it and click on it once. It should bring up a "preview" of the report in the next column. Or, you can double click on the report and the whole thing will show in TextEdit.

Oh, yes, I have my Finder set up in column mode. If you don't & just have icons all over, you can change it to the column mode by clicking on View in the top menu of your Finder window.

Anyway, looks complicated but really isn't. Goes fast. You just can't come up in a regular
preview in Mavericks (that I know of anyway).

Also, as I mentioned previously, the free programs OpenOffice for Mac or LibreOffice for Mac will open the .rtf files. If you are use to MS Office but don't want to pay the $ for Office for Mac, one of these will work great!

Well, here I went again...more words! Hope you find something that works for you.

You are confused by my response. If you have a brand new iMac with Mavericks installed as I do only the latest version of Pages will be installed. Again, a simple copy and paste of the text file into the new version is all that's needed for people in similar situation.

Bob White, it looks like you've provided me with the best answer so far. Thank you for that. I tried it and was easily able to get the report into Pages.

Also, as I said, I'm new to the mac world, so don't laugh, but I discovered the tiny window I got when I opened up TextEdit is expandable! Such a duh moment. Anyway, things look much better now.

          Thanks to all who replied.

All problems solved with the purchase of MS Office. After having used Word and Excel for decades I felt "funny" without them. Life is much better now. I can preview Register reports to my heart's content, modify sentences, etc. I will look for the videos you mentioned. Thanks all for your help.
