    Findagrave sourcing

I am using Reunion 10. I am wondering what others do when they want to source a Findagrave record.

I've set up one source under "Source Type: Web Site" with "Title" or "Author" as "Find A Grave" (without quotes) and a "URL" field. I then put "Memorial #XXXX" in the Detail. I copy the Source Citation and use it wherever there is information from the Memorial...i.e. birth, death, burial info.

I also have all the info regarding the Find A Grave entry in my "Misc. Notes" - always as the first entry.

I also have set up Stickies with info I can copy & paste regarding the different actions. Saves a lot of time.

        You're welcome.

Was reviewing my post when a "thought" popped into my head. Maybe it would be a good idea to add the specific memorial URL to the Source detail-especially since they are not very long. Tried it. URL wasn't active but, if you highlight the URL & right-click, one choice is "Open URL". Choose this and you are taken directly to the webpage.

Then, I thought, what would happen if I put the URL in the notes? Did so. Highlighted the URL & right-clicked. You can "Open URL" or "Make link". I clicked on Make Link and had an active URL!

Here is screenshot with both options showing:

I use the Web Site source type, with "Author" being the creator of the memorial, with additional entry if the current maintainer is different from the creator; "Title" is the name of the deceased individual, as it's displayed on the page; "URL" is the URL of the memorial page; "Date" is the date the memorial was created and "File Number" is the Find A Grave Memorial #, which I diplay in the Family View in Notes under the individual.

          Hope this helps.

I would use Ben Sayers method of Practical Citations.
Descriptive Title: Find A Grave... 'this could vary according to your wishes as long as it is a generalized title'.
            Publication Facts: Findagrave.com

Put specific details for each gravesite in the 'detail' section. This way you have one citation for all of the Find a Grave entries. Details change from one grave to the next.

If you have different 'publication facts', such as a photo you took yourself, then you would have a separate citation. I have not gotten to this yet but I might give these a different title.. such as Headstone, Grave Marker etc. so it would be less confusing to me when I search for citations to use. If the grave is put on Find A Grave in the future you could add that information to the details of those citations or put it in notes for the person.

              Re: Findagrave sourcing

I just use citation Find A Grave and then in the detail section add the remaining information. I have such a large database that creating an individual source for each Find A Grave citation would be a numerical nightmare.

" I agree wholeheartedly with this simpler method of sourcing."

This is basically what I did/do.

Really like Ben's course! I learn something new every day...so it seems!

I also use this system and it works pretty well. In some instances, I do 'drag' the icon located just to the left of the web address to the 'notes' section and add the data obtained contained in the Find-a-Grave below that entry via 'copy/paste'. Thus, the web address is captured in the notes field and you can click on it to return to that address as you need it.

As an example, I just clicked on the small 'globe' to the left of this web address and 'dragged' it into this message as seen below. This action also allows you to drag the icon (noted to the left of most web addresses) into the 'notes' field on your Reunion file.

On occasion, when the URL is so large that it will not fit into the 255 character URL item, I may add it to the 'Free-form Text' as a workaround.

I also add a note stating if I have personally verified the information I've copied from Find-a-Grave. There is a lot of good information on that site, but a lot of errors too.

As a side note, I was at an Ancestry.com seminar a month ago, and the speaker announced that they have just purchased Find-a-Grave. The speaker said they were going to leave it pretty much as is, but I'm sure we'll see some changes going forward.

Also, there is now a Find-a-Grave app for iPhone that looks like a great help in creating memorials and uploading photos. I'm anxious to try using it soon.

There have already been some changes---in the way you request edits. I find it makes things easier, in some ways. You do have to look at your profile pretty often because there is now an Edit button at the top right that lets you know if someone has requested an edit through the new system. You may still get email requests for things that aren't covered by the new Edit system, like transfer requests.

Also, for almost a month, we weren't getting email notices when someone satisfied a photo request. I then read, on the forum, that there was some kind of computer glitch. Finally started getting the notices again. I still haven't been able to thank everyone who did photos for me. I think that is so important because getting photos for others is a major part of the Find A Grave culture.

Haven't tried the app yet. I don't have a smartphone, just an iPad. I don't take many photos because, with my leg problems, it's so hard for me to get around cemeteries. Like the idea though.

First, read his article about his citation research. Be sure to read all the comments, too.
Only five of fourteen GEDCOM tags for source and citation information are safe. The first GenealogyTools training course, Practical Citation, will address this problem for you.
