I have somehow managed to have two family files - (I think identical) because they each have the same number of persons in them.
How do I merge them so that I only have one file?
If they're really identical, why merge them? Why not just trash one of them? You could look at the most recently changed records; that might help you to see whether the files are the same or not. You can order them by 'changed date, in the people index.

I just entered a similar question (before I figured out how to search). I'm having a hard time figuring out how to follow Jamie's suggestion of ordering by changed date in the people index. If I open the People Sidebar, I don't see any sorting options. I'm obviously missing something and will keep looking, but appreciate all hints.

Found the answer in another post. Select "Find" in the left pane, then "Changed This Week" in the presets and modify the date range as needed. Very helpful feature.
Get the People list up in the sidebar and click the icon at the bottom that makes it appear in a separate window. Click on one of the fields (not the 'First and Mid' or 'Last Name' fields) and one of the options is Attributes. One potential Attribute is "Changed Date'.
When one column shows "Changed Date', click on that once to sort by that field and your latest changed dates will be at the bottom (or the top).
