To merge or not to merge....

Hi everyone, and greetings from a Newbie to OSX and Reunion from Scotland...

I have just crossed over the "great divide" and ditched my years of struggling with Windows.

I find that my software of choice, Family Historian, does not come in OSX flavour, nor does is run too well under WINE type programs. I also do not wish to go down the route of dual-booting as this defeats the purpose of changing to Apple...

So, I've dipped my feet in the water with Reunion to give it a try-out, and have even been kindly given a timed unlock key to try importing my tree into Reunion in it's entirety...:-)

In Family Historian, I worked with two trees, one each for Paternal and Maternal lines...I found this worked well and kept things tidy and the files of manageable size.

Is this a wise/sensible thing to do in Reunion, or should I merge both trees (currently saved in GEDCOM format from Family Historian) and just work with one file...?

Or is it just a personal preference...?

    Thanks,

    Dougie.

I don't know if I'd take the active measure to merge files, especially if you have an established process to maintain them, but there are advantages to keeping everything in one file. Here's some discussions (with links to further discussions) about going in the other direction.

FWIW, Reunion is robust enough to handle large family files.

And one of the links in the links above discusses merging specifically.

        Tim,

        Many thanks...

        Here's what I've done...

Created a new Family File and imported my Paternal Gedcom file into it.

I then imported my Maternal side into this, adding the individuals to the Paternal one, followed by File/Match & Merge...

        ...seems to have worked...:-)

Glad I was able to point you in a useful direction. I don't think you'll regret merging your files.

As you can see, there's a lot of knowledge available from the members of this forum. Also, Reunion has one of the best digital user manuals anywhere... it's a great resource for the easy questions.
