    Reunions Numbering system

I switched over to using a mac 2 years ago from a PC. I used at that time Legacy for my genealogy. I just purchased Reunion 2 months ago and imported my gedcom into Reunion 10.

In Legacy I used their MRIN numbering system to file my papers and data I researched and have. That numbering system came from the marriages of two people. So the individual number #1 and individual #2 got married so their married Number [Mrin] is #1 You then stored the documents under that system The individual data as a single person stayed in the parents MRIN #. When they got marriage a new Number of storing their life's data started.

I have not seen a similar numbering system with reunion 10. Is There? Otherwise I will need to renumber every ones storage number to the individual number in Reunion with will be a pain in the neck.

Or is there a simpler way? Any Ideas...

    Welcome to Reunion!

Each individual is identified three different ways:
    1) Person ID,
    2) Family ID and
    3) The optional User defined ID.

It appears as though Reunion's "Family ID" is the equivalent to Legacy's "MRIN" as it serves the same purpose. That said, since you had to "import" your Legacy data into Reunion, the new Family ID will likely NOT match the old MRIN as the order of individuals matters internally to the program during the import process.

BTW, the Family ID is present on the "Couples view box"

If I may make an observation on the methodology used in documenting your research material.

It puzzles me as to why you chose to use the MRIN (in Legacy) to document your raw data. Maybe it is because I am "old school" when it comes to recording (documenting) source material. I find it to be vastly more effective to match Reunion's "Source" number to individual documents. I have even gone so far as to create a source field called: "Source Number." I use it to manually enter the source number generated by Reunion. Why go to all this trouble? Because whenever you merge two sources, Reunion automatically combines all of the fields in the two sources involved into the first source, and then deletes the other source, leaving a blank entry in the list of sources. The next time you create a NEW source, Reunion uses the lowest available number in that list! Thus, by having my manual entry number, I do not lose vital cataloging information when similar "sources" get merged!

As for filing my raw data, photos, and analyses:

PAPER: I mark each document with the catalog "Doc #" and the date I entered the data into my Reunion database, and then place the document is the appropriate folder by its sequential number.

DIGITAL: Each document is also marked with my "Doc #" and date, and then placed in the individual

Arnold; I'm not documenting data with a MRIN number. I'm storing the paper documents with that number common to the marriage.
