    Source Citation detail

Limit for this field is 255 characters. This is sometimes a problem if trying to include complete information especially url info. Is this a problem for others or should I not be trying to include as much info.

    From the manual:

"The detail is typically something very succinct and specific, like a page number, that connects a source to a piece of information. Detail is optional. You might think of sources as being more general, and detail as being more specific. For example, a book might be a source. A particular page number in the book would be the detail."

In addition to page numbers and dates of letters from a single person, I will sometimes use the detail field to specify what data was provided by the source when multiple sources are cited for a data field (e.g. "Added middle name from this source," or "added birthplace").

More extensive descriptions of the source would probably be better included in the Free Form Text Field of the source. Many people put extensive notes about the source contents here, but I personally tend to use sources as if they were source citations in a research paper and keep things mostly limited to where I can find the source. If I feel the need to include the source contents, I either attach a multimedia copy of the source, or transcribe the information and put it in the person notes with the source as a citation.

If you're needing to record a URL, there is a source type of Web Site available in the New Source menu which has a structured field set up for that information.

Thanks. I think using the "website" type source might be the way that helps in most cases.
