Brown line in relative chart

I have created a relative chart comprising eleven generations, and have deleted all the boxes for people who are not in the direct line. The spouses for the top three generations are all in a separate box, joined to the husband by a brown line.
How can I have those spouses names entered inside the box of the husband, like all the other generations?
As an experiment I generated a new relative chart with two completely different people, and again, the top three generations have this brown line and a separate box for the spouse.

In order for a relative chart to show the ancestors of both spouses in a marriage, and then to show the descendants of all those ancestors, the spouses need to be in separate boxes. All the marriages of the ancestors of the chart source person will be handled that way. If you’re just showing a direct line, I’m wondering if you might possibly be better served by creating a descendant chart starting with the furthest back couple. It will depend on who you’re specifically trying to include in the chart.

Thank you for your advice. I'm not quite sure I understand it though, because as I said, this only happens with the top three generations of the chart. Wives further down the chart are included in the boxes of their husbands (I should have said that I am following the direct line of male descent only).
The trouble with the descendant chart is that it is arranged horizontally, and I would like mine to be vertical, with the oldest generation at the top, and the siblings of each ancestor displayed as well. This seems such a common way to display a family tree (for example on the TV programme 'Who do you think you are?'), I can't understand why it appears not to be an option.

I assume you’re starting the chart with someone four generations from the top. All the marriages above that person will be separated.

You can change the orientation of charts (including descendant charts) by creating them and then going to the main menu at the top of the screen and choosing Tree>Orientation, then choosing the desired orientation from the pop up menu in the resulting window. It sounds like you want the Top to Bottom orientation.

With a descendant chart you’re going to want to start with the person at the top. Does this leave anyone out that you wanted to include?

Thank you - I had never realised one could change the orientation of the descendant chart to vertical, which is just what I wanted. I will have to investigate what the 'waterfall' component does...
