GEDCOM from FTM 2017

I have found an answer to an old post on this subject, but I am not quite sure I understand. I have FTM 2017 which is synched with Ancestry. I want to copy a tree to Reunion 12. The advice is to create a GEDCOM file using FTM version 3 for Mac and then import the GEDCOM into Reunion. But I am wondering why, or if I really do need to use FTM version 3? In FTM 2017 when I click EXPORT, I have to pick the output format from FTM 2017, FTM 3.1, GEDCOM or GEDCOM for FTM 16. So do I have to export to FTM version 3, and THEN export that as a GEDCOM? As part of a genealogy group, I regularly receive a gedcom from FTM 17 to import to Reunion. No special formatting--just import, and I have no problems with it.

Thanks.. does a direct import include links to image like picture and sources?

Sources, yes. Pictures, do not know, as FTM gedcom doesn't have them, but I doubt seriously, that gedcom supports this.

Thanks... when I first did this in Reunion 10 I did get pictures in eventually but can’t remember how I did it. I certainly didn’t import them separately. I’m wondering if this is why the Reunion advice is to use FTM version 3.. I could do a trial with a snipped tree. dont want to do the whole thing as it’s too big to check for mistakes.

Yes, an export from Family Tree Maker 2017 can include the Media items if you choose that option in the GEDCOM export dialogue in Family Tree Maker 2017.

Yes - they import into Reunion as images linked to the correct people.

I am trying to do the opposite, but since you're familiar with FTM and I am not, perhaps you can help me. A family member uses FTM but not Reunion. I exported a GEDCOM from Reunion and sent it to him to import into FTM. I included media in my export, but he doesn't know how to find the media files and link them back to each individual in FTM. Not being familiar with FTM, I haven't been able to help him. Any advice?

I have the same question. My cousin cannot find the media files in the gedcom I exported to her FTM from my Reunion 12. She contacted her FTM support and received this answer.
Any help appreciated. "The GEDCOM file may only contain links to media files, but not media itself. So, to import media of this tree, your relatives had to also provide you with the folder where all media for this tree is located and linked to the content of the GEDCOM file.

If this wasn't done correctly, media files will not show up in your tree.

I would recommend you to ask your relatives to re-export the file and make sure to follow correct instructions on how to deliver media along with the GEDCOM file in Reunion."

Multimedia files can't be included in the GEDCOM file -- as GEDCOM files are simply text files formatted in a specific way to transfer data. The GEDCOM does include the file path and filenames of the multimedia, but you will need to send her the actual multimedia files.

One way to get a folder containing all of the multimedia is to open your family file and go to:

Reports / Multimedia Usage

Then click the Multimedia Tools icon (looks like a hammer) at the bottom and select "Copy Files to New Folder...". Send her the resulting folder. Note that you will probably want to compress it into a ZIP file before sending.
