Export List Results to Excel, not as text

I've been trying to export a List Result into Excel, but Reunion seems only to let me export it as text or as a Word file. I need to deal with each individual in the Result List, and tick them off as they're done, which would be easy in Excel, but not as a text file. I've tried opening the text file with Excel, but it won't seem to 'respect' the columns, and puts all the names and data in one column. Can anyone see a way round this please?

You could do this entirely in Reunion - set a Flag on every individual that is in this list, and then as you do whatever it is you're going to do to them, unset the flag.

You're done when there is no one left Flagged

Hello again Roger, and thanks - once more! Your solution works in theory, but I've got a very long list of people to deal with, and it would stop me using markings until I've finished, which will be weeks hence. Actually I'm adding in ID numbers for everyone who has an IGI citation, and there are over 900 of them. I should of course have done this long ago, as they were entered, but 'faute de mieux'... I also tried saving a set of marked individuals, but that's interactive too, and if I start marking/unmarking people for other purposes, it also unmarks them in the saved set. Since posting, I have been able to get names and ID numbers into Excel from the text document; they're all in one column, but it's workable. Thanks again, all the best... Nick

Hi,

This is how I export reports, so it should work for what you want to do. The menu options on a newer Excel will likely be a little different from mine, but:

Hold the Option key when selecting the Share Icon, then export the data as a Plain Text File.
Launch Excel, then from the Data menu choose Import External Data - Import Data.
In the Select Data Source dialog browse to the .txt file, then in the Import Wizard choose Delimited Data, Tab Delimited.

Thank you Alan. I tried doing this: trouble is, the Import Wizard can't seem to deal with the multiple delimiters in the text file, and whatever I do it comes out like this:

\par JENNINGS\tab Thomas Laidman\tab 15 May 1900\tab Sunderland RD, DUR

all in the first column.
But Roger the Kiwi came up with a better idea than mine (above) and I'm now pursuing that with great success.

OK. A solution completely within Reunion is usually the better choice. If you ever run across a case where the report does need to be exported, though, I think you will find you have been exporting a Text file which in Reunion has Rich Text formatting. This is evidenced by the \par (new paragraph) and \tab (tab character) tags that tell an RTF reader how to format the page. For more generic data transfers, Reunion can also create a Plain Text file that is only tab/return delimited - no RTF tags.

It's just too bad that this plain text export is hidden under needing to use the Option key when clicking on the previous item - the Share button. It should be simply be there as a choice in the menu at all times.
