Adding in a generation

On my wife's side I have just discovered that the family tree is missing a generation. How do I add a generation in between 2 already existing records? The person now being the child, should actually be the grand child, but I need to "insert" the missing parents in between.
The confusion, in the tree that was given to me is that the surnames of relatives, on both sides are the same, the person entering them in to his tree didn't have any dates, and missed a generation. I didn't do any research, when I first got the tree, just entered it in blind faith. It is a long list of generations, and I don't want to delete and start from scratch. I would like to correct it without screwing up too much.

Move the child to the clipboard. Add the child's new parent as a child to the family card where the child was. Go to the parent's family card. Move the child to the family card.
