converting 12 > 13 creates dups?

i just upgraded from version 12 to 13, and i noticed something peculiar: some of my people seem to have multiplied! i have 3 or more of some individuals (i haven’t investigated thoroughly yet). it’s a file of about 3,000 people.

is this a known bug or something? and how best to fix it?

There is no known bug that would cause this.

I would suggest deleting the Reunion 13 file, then re-converting the 12 file to 13 (if you no longer have the 12 file, let me know), being sure to follow the steps in this FAQ:

Specifically, make sure you're opening the file using Reunion 13 to convert it, as opposed to creating a new family file in Reunion 13 and importing the Reunion 12 file into the new file.

If the issue persists, I'd recommend sending us the Reunion 12 family file, as outlined here:

If we can take a look at the Reunion 12 file we should be able to determine the cause of the duplication.

thank you. i’ll investigate further on my own, to narrow the problem down more accurately, and then probably send you a copy.

... further investigation of my backup files shows that the duplication was already there prior to the conversion, i just hadn't noticed it before.

so the panic's over, but my next question is, where can i find a tutorial on finding and merging dups? i've found the function, and i understand what it's supposed to do, but the actual merging makes me nervous, because i don't want to overwrite data by merging "in the wrong direction".

The merging process is discussed in detail in the manual -- select Help -> Contents from the main menu-bar, then go to the Match & Merge entry under Other Topics on the right-hand column of the Contents page.

There's a section of that manual entry that discusses What Happens When Records Are Merged? which should help you understand how information will be combined to create a single record when merging people.
