Trouble merging two people into one

Hello folks. I have two children entered into a family, one with a DOB and baptism (Derk Buning) and another with a spouse and date of death (Theodorus Buning). I just learned that Theodorus is the Latinized version of Derk and that these two are the same person. I read some of the postings about merging, but I can't get it to work. I've marked the immediate family and went to File > Match and Merge People, and selected one of the two, but it said there were no matches, so I changed the name Theodorus to Derk so I'd have two Derks, but that wouldn't work either. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks in advance!

Match and Merge searches for potential matches, then offers to merge them for you. In your case, you already know you have a match, so you can take a shortcut. This is outlined under "Merging People the Easy Way" on the Match & Merge page of the manual:
