Split family file, export as Reunion file or GEDCOM

I have a large family file and would like to send a portion to a cousin who is exploring the same line as my main one. What I would like to do is use my father as the source person and identify all of my father's ancestors (I have 30+ generations). Then save a file with all of the data either as a separate Reunion file or export to GEDCOM.

I'll appreciate any feedback on this or an alternative approach.

The very 1st question is: Does your cousin have Reunion and is it the same version as yours?

If your cousin has Reunion of the same version as yours, send a Reunion file of the subset.

If your cousin has a different genealogy program, send a GEDCOM of the subset.

If your cousin doesn't have a genealogy program, wait until he/she has one OR consider making a web project of the subset and sending that to be run on a hard drive (though I don't think the search/find feature will work when using it on the hard drive.)

Thanks for the input. My cousin does not have Reunion. I need to revise my question.I'm looking for some basic instructions on how to split the file and export to GEDCOM. The Reunion Manual isn't very clear on this in my reading.

The key to this process is the Reunion marking feature. It's a powerful part of the application, and getting familiar with it will pay dividends in many areas when analyzing and trying to understand and organize your data.

To start, navigate in Family View to the person you want the export to start with, then select Mark in the Navbar on the right. In this panel, you'll have the option to mark ancestors of your person--you'll probably also want to include the source couple and spouses with the check boxes. Also choose the unmark everybody first option so as to eliminate any hangers on.

Now that the correct set of people is marked/chosen, go back to Family View and select from the main menu at the top of the screen File>Export>GEDCOM. In that window, you can choose Marked people only, and whatever other options make sense to you.

For future reference, and it was very helpful, but the Navbar is on the left.
