I know there is something simple to fix this... expanding the view...

I just know there is a simple solution to this but I am stuck. Somehow I lost the horizontal adjuster so that I can see the events. I can't "find" the horizontal adjuster thing... See screenshot. I should be able to see birth, death, etc. but it's hiding from me.

It's there, but not as a 'pop up'. Place your curser in that grey area to the right on the 'children' box. Click & drag up or down.

Thanks! I knew it was there somewhere but I just hadn't hit the right spot yet.

Or use the roller wheel on your mouse if you use a mouse.

I'm not a mouse user but thanks Bob White for the tip!

I use a laptop but never have found a mouse that scrolls through census records (for instance) smoothly and slow. it’s getting harder to teach this ol’ dog new tricks…

Sounds like you have been using a trackpad for a long time. Smooth and slow is simply a matter of setting your comfortable scrolling speed via System Settings. I use mice on my laptop and desktops both as I find trackpads to be a big strain to the fingers and wrist. I can mouse all day without a bit of strain.
