Reunion is acting strangely… real jerky, delayed entries...

So far Reunion is the only application that is acting strangely… Since last night when I went to enter names, dates, etc. there is a second or so delay in what I enter. As I move from field to field there is a delay. I am using 13.0 version. I rebuilt the caches. I even restarted my 2020 M1 MBP in Safe Mode. Neither one made a difference. Any idea what I can do to smooth things out? I am running 13.3.1 on my Mac. Thank you for any help… Judy

How odd - I have been having something similar with Reunion for a few weeks now.

When entering info I frequently have a delay or wait for a spinning beachball to finish before in-putting following text.

Like you I am using Reunion 13 (230307) on an iMac Ver. 12-6-5 (27" - late 2015 with 24 GB RAM) and began to think it was caused by an ageing iMac.

Re-starts have not had any effect.

    iMac 27" (late 2015) 2TB, 24GB Ram, (Monterey 12.3.1) iPad Pro 12.9" 256GB (Ios 14.4), iPhone 6S+ 128GB (Ios 14.4), Reunion 13,

Well, alan, I’m sorry to hear you are having the same issue but glad I am not the only one to be having this issue. So apparently it’s not your iMac nor my M1 Mac. Restarting and shutting down have had no effect. Maybe there are other users experiencing the same issue.

Judy and Alan: try the following:

        1. Open your family file and choose Reunion -> Preferences (or Settings) and click on General. Then, in the Data Entry section, "uncheck" the box to "Check for duplicates when adding new people"...

        Screen Shot 2023-05-04 at 9.48.54 AM.png

        2. If problems still continue, try opening the Relatives sidebar on the right and clicking the Change button. Then, "uncheck" the box to "Identify relationships on the fly"...

        Screen Shot 2023-05-04 at 9.49.58 AM.png

        3. If you have pictures linked to people in the family file, you may want to confirm that the links to those pictures are all good. This can be done by choosing Reunion -> Preferences (or Settings) and selecting Multimedia. Then, after ensuring the storage location of your media files (pictures) is shown in the search section, click the "Repair Multimedia Links" button and Proceed. If there are any media files missing, Reunion will try to fix those broken links. If there are still some that are broken, you will have the option to see the "Multimedia Usage Report" showing the names of the missing items, and the locations where they were last seen by Reunion. Locate those missing files by opening a Finder window and using the search box in the upper-right corner of that Finder window to search for each missing file by file name. Once an item is found, there are a couple ways to fix the link. The easiest is usually to drag it from its current location on your hard drive onto that missing item in red in the Multimedia Usage Report panel. Then, click the button to update the link.

I hope you find one of these suggestions helpful in resolving the slowing you are both seeing

However, if problems continue, it may be best to send your family file to us to see if we can duplicate the slowness you are seeing. Information about how to do so can be found here...

Thanks, Deb. I will try those suggestions for sure. But I do want to have Reunion identify duplicates… I will let you know if it helps or not.

So I unchecked the duplicates box and unchecked the relationships on the fly and no difference. Multimedia links were good. I will do the next step when I get back home from our vacation. Thank you.

I have the same issue on 2017 intel iMac. The biggest help I found was to Uncheck the "Color tags" useage. I had several thags with several thousand persons showing. Currently I have only 1 "color tag" checked and it works much better. I did find that the DropBox at times seemed to be slowing the process down too. Recently my ISP has changed my data subscription and that too seems to help. Between the slow data speed at times and dropbox I think are my two biggest issues.

Currently I am running reunion 13 on an external SSD using Ventura, my file has over 73k persons. Most of the spinning ball has gone away, but at times it still pops up. I am not fond of dropbox in Ventura, since they at times leave my files in the cloud, which is not good for speed.

Well, that’s interesting, bigfoot4. I have 3 tags (or maybe it’s 2). I have a large database too. Deb, from technical support, said I can send in my file and someone will take a look at it there and see if they can figure out what’s causing the issue. I plan on doing that when I get home from traveling. I don’t really want to give up my color tags…

I have followed the steps suggested by Deb but they have not improved the system. Definitely finding delays of some time (seconds) before I can go on to the next item and frequent spinning beachball occurs .

Today when adding some info I had a "popup" saying that Dropbox was downloading a file. Unfortunately it disappeared before I could capture an image. Likewise I also had a "p/up" indicating Reunion was doing the same before disappearing.

I have re-built the cache files and also repaired m/media links all good ( I do this frequently) and I do not use the "Colour Tags".

On dropbox my file only occupies 17.1% of my allowance so I don't think that has much to do with these problems.

I have now sent my f/file to Reunion for attention

Just a guess, but make sure that your Family File and any media files you have linked to Reunion (people or sources) that are in your Dropbox folder are set to "Make available offline". If not, Dropbox has to download files when needed and that may be the cause of the delay.

thomprod-How do I choose that option? I searched in the manual using the word ‘offline’ and nothing was found. I looked at Dropbox and didn’t see anything.
alan-please let me know what the outcome is from Leister about your file. I am very interested. I’m traveling back home on Wednesday so I won’t be sending a file till after then.

Steve is highly likely "right on" with his answer. I never link photos or other media using URLs. Linking to an outside location is literally like trying to walk across quicksand. You are going to sink nearly every time. Website locations get changed constantly and, thus, are not dependable for this situation.

Store the photos and other media locally on your Mac. Not on Dropbox or other websites --- locally -- period!

I don’t have any external links for media-they (I have headstones mostly and an icon I use to denote a “possible relative” that is attached to lots of ancestors. I don’t have any census’ or that type of media attached to anyone. They are all in the Documents folder and my familyfile is in Dropbox). I just checked and I have about 5000 images. Is the location for the icons/headstone photos, etc. being in a separate place from the familyfile an issue do you think?

No to the being in a separate place question. Your family file is on your Mac; the Dropbox copy is a mirror image AND the two constantly synch to keep the mirror correct. I guess we will wait to see what the Leister folks say when you have them look at your file.

Update-As of a few minutes ago Reunion is acting like it should. I don’t know what I did. I know that I didn’t restart my Mac. I didn’t shut down my Mac. I didn’t run Clean My Mac (not today anyway). But all of a sudden Reunion started running smoothly! I don’t know what else to say. I hope this streak continues. And I am still interested to hear from alan about his file he sent to Reunion. And anyone else having this issue.
