    Split Family File

I have done a lot of work on a cousins family history which consists of 500 persons along with their multi-media and reference sources. My aim is to remove them from my Family File and to export them to a separate and new Reunion Family File on my mac in the event that they will one day become interested.
I have seen discussion on the topic in this forum but am concerned that it was a few years old. The instructions were a little different to what I was seeing on my screen (Reunion13) and I don't want to make a mistake.
Is there an up to date instruction that I am missing?
Is there a way for me to move all of the media and reference source (PDF) documents to that new location?
I am thinking that when and if the situation arrives I may not be around to carry out the task so I need to make it as simple as possible.

    Regards Michael

I encourage you to think about the benefits (if any) of splitting your file. Reunion has no issues handling large databases (mine's over 200K individuals with thousands of sources) and you can easily include/exclude individuals when generating reports and graphs. There's a good chance you'll need to include chunks of the split file down the line which will possibly negate any short term "gains".

Thank you Benoit, it's worth considering.

Once again thank you Benoit, it's worth considering. But if I can set the cousin's data aside in a separate Reunion family file it will always be available.

You could split them off as a family file, BUT still keep them in the "main" family file.

I assume you have read the help section "Splitting Family Files"?

Yes James, I have read the help topic and it was that, that prompted me to seek assistance from the forum. There is a weight of opinion that I should consider not splitting and I think that if I was able to colour tag them they would not be a nuisance to me.

I see that no one has answered your questions, only tried to persuade you from doing what you wanted to do. You should be able to do what you want to do in less then a day, so I don't think you will need to designate someone else to carry out the task.

The built in manual that Reunion provides is up-to-date and gives a great example (Example: Splitting Files for Mom and Dad). Briefly, mark the people you want to split off from your main family then export those with the appropriate settings to export Marked people, Cited sources, and All multimedia checked.

If you want to delete those marked people from your family file now that they are in their own new file, choose File > Delete > Marked People in the original file. The example they give to do that is titled Example: Deleting A Branch.

If there is some detail about doing either of these processes that doesn't make sense, just ask specific questions.
