    Sort children by default

When I enter a child of parents it typically gets put at the bottom of the list of children. The report then uses this structure as it lists the children of parents. In many cases I do not enter the names in chronological order especially if the children of a deceased person is found in an obituary. When dates become available to the children the order remains the same and in order to make it correct I have to do a manual sort.

Is there a way to cause the entry of children to be automatically sorted based upon known dates?

    Thanks,
    Hayward

Just click on the Children button and the next to the last action choice is Sort.

      Thank you Bob,

Yes that is what I have to resort to do.

If I make a new entry and it's a person who was born earlier than those already listed then in order to see them in chronological order I have to sort again.

I was asking if there is a means that the sorting is taken care of by the application. As new entrants are entered it automatically sorts based upon the chronology of the dates.

      Thanks,

No. I believe the reason is preferences. Follow Bob White's advice.

Another option is to use the Change > Sort > Children option which will sort all of the children in your family file.

You can access this feature by clicking the Change button on the navbar on the left.

You can drag the child buttons into order too if you have the button view set.

Thank you Gregg, that makes it much easier to sort just before I produce my reports. I'm a bit curious why Reunion would not have sorting as a default?

I note that SGilbert mentions its a preference thing. Wondering why the default preference would not be sort as you enter a date.

Thank you your quick replies everyone.

...why Reunion would not have sorting as a default?
When you're in the process of adding children, the data for those children is in a state of 'flux.' Maybe you know the order of the children but not the birth dates or maybe you know some dates and not the order and maybe you know there are children but don't even know the names, order or dates.

Rather than Reunion deciding at what point during child entry is a good time to do the sort you're given the option to drag to sort of sort in a single click when you are comfortable with the information you've entered for the children. These sorting options for children on a single family are available on the family view and in the batch entry window.

                I hope that explains it.

                  Thank you Gregg,

Thank you taking the time to explain the reasoning behind the decision to leave it to the user for sort purposes.
