    Web Hosts

My website uses the Reunion Web cards that I upload with an FTP client (Fetch) to RootsWeb Freepages (part of Ancestry). RootsWeb is closing shop and I need to find a new web host. I was looking at Simply Hosting, the host that many TNG users use.

I do not want to go the TNG route, but does anybody know if Simply Hosting can accept Reunion Web cards using an FTP client like I do with my current host? If so, is it easy-peasy? I am not crazy technical with this aspect of computing, but my son who is a Senior Software Engineer for a large company will be around during Christmas time to help.

    Thanks a lot.

Yes - you can FTP your web cards to a site on Simply Hosting. If you want the site to only have the web cards, and no other pages, or anything outside of the web cards just generate the project with index.html or .htm as the home card and then load the contents of the web cards project folder to the public_html folder on your site.

You can also buy a domain name through Simply Hosting so that they control the DNS entries for your domain and point the domain name to your site at Simply Hosting.

Thanks Roger. The loading of the web cards, as you describe it, is almost exactly how I do it now.

The domain aspects still confuse me a bit. My son owns the domain name Darveaux. As such, he has it set so that someone entering in Darveaux.com as the URL, is redirected to the Rootsweb Freepages site. If I used Simply Hosting, can I use Darveaux.com directly without redirection? Or does there need to be a Simply Hosting URL to get to them?

If your son owns darvaux.com, you can have that be the domain name for a site at Simply Hosting.

There are 2 ways to achieve that:

1 - leave the domain where it is (godaddy or wherever it's registered and he pays) and have their name servers point to your the name servers at SimplyHosting -

        DNS1.SHNW.NET
        DNS2.SHNW.NET

and in the cPanel you'll get at Simply Hosting link that to your account

2 - perhaps easier, transfer the domain name to Simply Hosting and they'll take care of making sure your web space there acquires the domain darveaux.com

            Blaise,

I recently made the same decision since Ancestry has begun to play hard ball! I had my domain name for over 12 years was registered at go daddy. I have since then moved it to IONOS this year, and also have IONOS as my web hosting site. IONOS does allow for sub domains, which is very helpful if planning reunions or other areas of interest. My Reunion web card project is now at genealogy.whitesellsomers.com which I update monthly.
I have other sub domains for different reunions also, all can be found at the site at whitesellsomers.com

This move made my online stress level much much easier and simpler than before. I invite you to take a look at IONOS if you haven't gone a different direction.

            Merry Christmas! Terry
